    Cadbury Munster U21FC final

    Kerry v Tipperary, Tralee, 7.30pm
    Referee: Conor Lane

John Evans Tipperary side head into Wednesday’s Munster decider against Kerry looking to end a run of three final defeats on the trot.

This game is a repeat of the 2008 final when Kerry won out by 0-15 to 2-07 before going on to beat Kildare in the All-Ireland final. In fact, Tipperary have been beaten in the Munster final by the eventual All-Ireland winner in each of the last three years.

Senior star Sean Carey kick seven points, six from play, as they beat Limerick by five points in the semi final. Conor Sweeney and Ciaran McDonald are also players to keep an watch out for on Horan’s team.

John Kennedy’s Kerry team have been highly impressive in reaching the final and comfortably saw off the challenge of Cork and Waterford to reach this stage. Forwards such as the two BJ’s, Walsh and Keane, James O’Donoghue and Paul Geaney have caught the eye while Johnny Buckley has been excellent in midfield.

Tipperary will be desperate to end their run of final defeats but they could face disappointment once again in Tralee.

    Verdict: Kerry

    Cadbury Ulster U21FC semi-finals
    Derry v Donegal, Omagh, 8.00pm
    Referee: Leo Smyth

This highly anticipated clash features two of the most exciting young forwards in the country and should lead to a cracking game.

Donegal’s Michael Murphy has already made an impact on the national scene with the senior team while it’s surely only a matter of time before Derry’s Lee Moore does something similar.

Moore scored 2-1 as Derry overcame Fermanagh by 5-9 to 2-12 in a high scoring quarter final win but they needed late goals from Benny Heron and Aaron Kerrigan to survive a strong second half comeback by the Erne County.

Murphy only managed a point as Donegal beat Armagh 1-9 to 0-9 at the same stage but he did play an instrumental role in James Carroll’s decisive goal. Wing forward Dermot Molloy scored six points in that win while midfielder Leo McLoone also chipped in with a brace of points in an eye catching display.

This Derry side contain many of the minor team who were All-Ireland runners up in 2007 but Murphy’s presence could swing this game in Donegal’s favour.

    Verdict: Donegal

Monaghan v Cavan, Brewster Park, 8.00pm
    Referee: Eugene McConnell

Cavan were certainly impressive in a heavy 3-14 to 1-8 win over last year’s All-Ireland runners up Down but Monaghan in Brewster Park will prove to be another difficult obstacle to clear before they can talk about winning out Ulster.

In that game against Down, Cavan flew out of the traps and led 2-7 to 0-2 at half time and they continued that form into the second half. Gearoid McKiernan and David Givney formed a solid partnership in midfield and gave the high scoring forward line the platform to go on and win the game.

Monaghan had a closer game against Antrim in Belfast before eventually winning 2-12 to 2-6. The impressive Kieran Hughes and David Miller got the goals and it was only a late Antrim goal that put some respectability on the final scoreline.

This is a tough game to call and should be to a very close encounter but if McKiernan and Givney can get the right sort of ball into the forward line then Cavan should prevail.

    Verdict: Cavan.
    Home Draw Away
    19:00 Kerry U21 (2/7) v (8) Tipperary U21 (3)
    20:00 Derry U21 (1/2) v (15/2) Donegal U21 (15/8)
    20:00 Monaghan U21 (11/10) v (13/2) Cavan U21 (10/11)

Tip will give Kerry a good game and could cause an upset.
I expect Derry to win and push hard for the All Ireland.

Well as a Westmeath man living in Roscommon I'm disappointed to be out of the country this weekend. As Westmeath having beaten Meath, Kildare and Laois have to travel to Parnell Park to take on the Dubs in the Leinster Final. A neutral venue would have been preferable but I think the majority of the support will still be from the Lake County as they seek there first title since 2000.

Roscommon will be favourites to beat Sligo in the Connacht decider with Donie Shine their star player having beaten Mayo in the semi-final.
I'm hoping for a Westmeath/Roscommon double to lift the gloom on what has been a dissapointing start to the year so far.

Delighted for Tipp after last years heartbreak!

Tipp had been getting closer and closer in the previous years, they reached the last three finals, losing all three by narrow margins. Hopefully this will do for Tipp football what Limerick's U-21 win in 2000 did for them. Congrats.

Kerry kicked so many bad wides last night they didn't deserve to win.
The Tipp No.9 was outstanding and the team were very composed in possession and took their chances well despite being under the cosh for long periods.
Well deserving winners and hope that they can go on to win it now

Congrats to Roscommon on winning their first Under 21 Connaught since
1999. Great to lift the gloom in Roscommon after getting relegated to Division 4 in the Senior. Best of luck against the Dubs on the 17th. :D:D:D:D

Cadbury Ulster U21FC final – live scores & results – Wednesday 7 April

    Wednesday 7 April

    Cadbury Ulster U21FC final
Donegal v Cavan, Brewster Park, 8.00pm

DONEGAL and Cavan meet in the last of the four provincial Under 21 finals in Enniskillen on Wednesday night just four days after both teams came through tough semi finals.

The victorious semi finalists were due to have a weeks rest after their game but bad weather in the North caused the postponement of the semi finals on the original date last Wednesday and they were eventually played on Saturday.

The game is a repeat of the 1995 final when Donegal took the crown after a replay. Cavan lifted the trophy the year after but neither county has a won an Ulster title at this grade since. Cavan haven’t even been to a final since their ’96 win and it’s Donegal’s first appearance in the decider since they lost two in a row in ’99 and ’00.

All eyes will be on Donegal’s talented forward Michael Murphy. This game could be the start of a very significant few days for the current Young Footballer of the Year as he will also have a big role to play for the senior team on Sunday against Armagh as they look for promotion to Division 1.

He scored the only goal of the game as Donegal overcame the first half dismissal of Peter McGee to beat Derry 1-11 to 0-10 in the semi final and another good performance in this game would really add to his growing reputation.

In the other semi final, David Givney settled the game in Cavan’s favour with a late point to give them a 1-10 to 1-09 win against Monaghan.

Givney and Gearoid McKiernan have been in excellent form in the centre of the field for Cavan as they have progressed to the final and this is one area where they might feel they will have the upper hand but Donegal’s Leo McLoone will have something to say about that.

This should prove to be another exciting and tight game but the brilliance of Murphy gives Donegal the edge. The winners will go on to face Munster Champions Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi final with Dublin and Roscommon facing off in the other last four tie.

    Verdict: Donegal.

Dublin really tested by Westmeath in second half at Parnell park on Sunday before winning out on a 1-12 0-9 in Leinster final. Scored 1-2 in last five minutes to secure win.

Looking forward to the semis now, 4 counties that don't win All-Ireland's too regularly at any grade. Any word on venues? I assume it could be a double header in Portlaoise, Tullamore, Mullingar or Longford.

Most of the team are overage this year but Donie Shine is one that isn't.

From the 2006 winning panel we have Donie Shine, Niall Carty, James McKeague, Kevin Higgins, Paul Garvey and Alan O'Hara.
