Broken Nose...very upset

    Hi,

I'm a 25yr old guy. I broke my nose playing rugby on Saturday morning. I played on thinking it was just a cut, i didnt do anymore damage to it tho.

I iced it and took ibprofen Saturday and Sunday, I thought it was just bruised, so i didnt really care and it wasnt really sore. I decided to go to the work doctor yesterday (Monday), she said she couldnt tell if it was broken and to wait a week for the swelling to go down, but she was heavily hinting that its was broken and there was nothing that could be done. Id say 90% of the swelling was gone at this point.

I was upset so left work early, kinda broke down at home and rang the parents, they told me to head to the ER straight away so i went and they told me i had a slight fracture and referred me to an ENT doctor.

I rang the ENT this morning so i'm waiting for them to ring me back about setting up an appointment.

My bridge is broken and its twice as wide as it is normally, there is very little swelling left to go down. I'm v scared its going to stay this way or ill have to get cosmetic surgery. Yesterday i could push in the bones of my bridge so im hoping it can be put back but from what ive read on the internet, reseting of the nose with out surgery is only for straightening it and not for the bridge.

The worst thing about this is when i was 15/16/17 i had an unhealthy obsession with my nose which lead to a lot of bad times during that period and there was nothing wrong with my nose (it was slightly big but i made it out to be way worse than it was), i totally fabricated it in my head. I made myself out to be ridiculously ugly (which was the exact opposite) during that time and i retracted socially.

I havent thought about my nose or my stupid obsession since then and the last couple of months have been excellant and i have really thrived at getting over the emotional scarring i left myself with from those years and this happens, i feel so ill and gutted at the moment and i dont want to go back to that time again.

I dont know what i want from writting this, or i hope to achieve, i just need to let some of the anger out. Maybe people can tell me the good and/or the bad of their breaking nose experiences and if their nose was ever the same again.

    Thanks.

OP relax a bit, a broken nose is not the end of the world, you could have much worse injuries.

I broke my nose when I was 11, went over the handlebars of my bike and landed on my face on the road, broke my nose, loosened 4 front teeth, split my lip, it was agony. They gave me the choice of pushing it back into position or surgery to fix it, I was young and wanted the quick fix so had it popped back in, that hurt like hell but it did the job. My nose has been slightly crooked ever since, I notice it but no one else does, which I find hilarious because it genuinely looks totally different from either side, but nobody notices unless I show them.

When I was in my early 20's I swore I would get it fixed surgically but I'm 25 now, have gotten used to it. My boyfriend and my ex boyfriend both had broken noses too, both were always slightly different afterwards but nothing too obvious, it's normally only with repeated breaks that they look very bad.

You could have broken an arm or a leg, nose isn't so bad.

Hey OP, don't be terrified of cosmetic surgery. Its really commonplace now. My BF had his nose broken and had to have it fixed, its really perfect and looks exactly like his natural nose. You would never even know!

He got it done in Clane hospital btw.

Take care and don't panic, it can be fixed

Get a Rhinoplaty, just like Ross O Carroll Kelly

Even if you do need cosmetic surgery, there's nothing to worry about. All they'll be doing is reshaping the bridge. You're not going to end up like Michael Jackson. You'll be in and out of surgery in about half an hour and your nose will look like its old self afterwards.

And hey, you could even get it reduced while you're there!

My boyfriends's the same! He broke his nose, had it popped back and claims it's crooked. For the life of me I can't see this and wouldn't care if it fell off :D

What has your GP said about it? That'd probably be the most helpful person to tell your options for what it can look like.

Have broken my nose more than once. Had it fixed after one particularly bad break. I was very self-conscious about it for a long time but eventually got over it. Do whatever you think you will feel most comfortable with!

I wouldnt worry about it too much at all. ive broken my nose 3 times playing rugby and yes i notice that its slightly bigger but nobody else seems to care. pretty much the same age as you too. First time was an elbow in the face, second time a knee to the side of my nose and the third time a clash of heads while it was still healing.

I have fractured the bridge and last time around the cartilage becase quite seperated from the rest of my nose. have to admit i was pretty devistated at the time. The funny thing is my gf loves it because she says it adds character and makes me unique. I still dislike it but its part of me and il live with it.

My suggestion would be to keep playing rugby and enjoy it and if you still want to, have your nose doen when you have retired! Do be careful though because it can break again pretty easy while it heals, maybe you should wait till next season before you play again. oh and dont be afraid to tell people what happened to it!

As for having an obsession with your looks/nose before you dont have to go back there. You have delt with it before and breaking your nose doesnt change the person you are. And if you only broke it on saturday then there is still plenty of swelling left to go down, seem to remember mine took a few weeks to settle down!

    OP Here.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

This week has been horrible so far, i'm really beat up about it, trouble sleeping, eating and concentrating at work, barely worked up the courage to come in today.

Although the majority of the bruising is gone this morning, which makes the nose look better even tho its much larger than usual which i think will be permanent. Still have a slight bit of pain and a constant headache.

I see the Ear, Nose & Throat doctor tomorrow so im hoping he can help...hopefully i can avoid getting too worked up about it till then.

I'll let ye know how i get on tomorrow.

Cafecolour: I went to my GP on Monday morning as a precaution when i didnt believe it was broken. She said she couldnt tell if it was broken but to wait a week for the the swelling to come down, but she strongly hinted that it was broken. She said theres is nothing you can do about it. That visit with my GP left me v upset so i went to the ER that evening and they performed a lot more tests and said its was fracture and referred me to an ENT doctor.
