Thanks to anyone who can help.

RTÉ and Globalisation by Farrell Corcoran is a good book to read.

Don't approach the essay by comparing RTÉ to the BBC, if you are going to do it remember that RTÉ had nearly 15 years with out a fee increase and even when it did happen in mid-1990s it was minimal and the fact that the BBC have far more licences to collect and are a far bigger commercial organisation.

Think about what RTÉ do, remember the TV Licences doesn't just go toward TV, it goes toward a variety of things. Read their Annual Reports.

Well I did compare RTE to the BBC but I did state what time both began broadcasting televison and that RTE is still growing and is long ways off from BBC. Thanks for the book mention, got any chapters that I should focus on?

RTÉ will never come close to the BBC in terms of production etc, they might in terms of numbers of Radio and Television but you will note that as the BBC services has grown their quality had reduced e.g. BBC Three is it really a Public Service Broadcast? (a whole essay in itself). And also that the BBC own a wide range of commercial services outside of Britain and with in Britain through BBC Worldwide. For example the BBC own 50% of UKTV and has a number of International Television Services which the co-own or have agreements with other broadcasters such as Discovery and Canwest. It has been UK Government policy since the 1980s that the BBC uses its strength to develop its programming through commercial services. The Book by Corcoran shows how on several occasions RTÉ were either stopped or removed from commercial entities. They were just about let apply for the Second National Mobile Phone service, they were told on 2 occasions to sell Cablelink, on the second occasion they wanted to develop DTT with the money earned from the Cablelink sale to NTL.

Here is a review of the book and explains each of the chapters http://www.cjc-online.ca/index.php/journal/article/viewArticle/1555/1701

Can I ask who your lecturer is?

I probably shouldn't give out their name but I go to college in Galway, that's all I'm saying :P

Thanks again for the help, but now looking at the review on the book it seems it has aload of stuff about TV3 and one of the essays we got was on it so I don't know weather to switch to that subject now or continue with the licence one, I'm guessing for the licence one I should stick with the first few chapters of the book or am I wrong? Also do you have any other books I should look towards or even websites dealing with the licence? Also thanks for the tip about looking at the annual reports, I got about 4 pages of notes off the 2008 one alone, I don't think the 2009 report is out yet though or am I wrong?
    Thanks very much again.

To ignore what TV3 do when evaluating the Licence fee would be a major mistake IMO, the same can be said of the Independent Radio Sector. The book is about Corcoran's time as Chairperson of the RTÉ Authority, TV3 was just being set up as was TG4.

2009 Annual Report won't be available until around June depending on the Dept of Comms.

TV3 always put forward their reasons against the licence fee. (IMO they don't hold up). As does the IBI http://www.ibireland.ie/

If you go through this forum you will find allot of discussions surrounding the TV Licence.

It all depends on how long the essay should be.

Just remember that 7% is now going towards the Sound and Vision Fund.

I remember a reading a short book on Swedish TV from the EU, I am sure their is a similar one available on Irish Broadcasting.
