I bought a Sony laptop 14 months ago which it cost 1299 euro.. It started shutting itself down. I brought it back to the shop to be told that the fan was gone in it and that it was out of warranty but would cost between 300 to 500 to fix... I thought paying so much for a laptop that i would get a longer life span on it.
i was just wondering is there anything else could be done without paying that much to get it fixed.

The problem you have is that the laptop is overheating due to the non running fan. With a normal computer its a simple case of taking the cover off and popping on a new €20 fan. This isn't as easily done with a laptop, hence the price you are being quoted or maybe they are trying to convince you into buying a new laptop.

The price of the laptop doesn't have much to do with the fan quality tbh, it is more than likely the same fan as other cheaper models in the range and you are just unlucky. The possibility also remains that the fan may not be faulty, just clogged up with dirt and it is stopping it from turning. If you google 'laptop fan' you'll get tonnes of how to guides that will show you how to open your laptop up and try and fix it, but i'd only recommend this if your some way familiar with tinkering with PC's etc., maybe you could as a friend or similar who might be more techy.

If you do end up going for a new laptop, personally i'd stay away from Sony's or other high street models. You can get a reasonably priced Dell for €500 or so, which means when you do have a problem that costs so much to fix, your original investment loss is not as much.

Oh, and moving thread from Electrical to Laptops forum.

Sony have set prices for repair tiers. this is available somewhere online but ive not got the time atm to check. im pretty sure that you should be in the lowest tier which was about 150 euro (still too much). my memory is blank at the moment but there is a place in dublin (as its assumed everybody is from dublin on boards) that should be able to fix it for a lot less. a friend of mine got a screen fixed for a sony for ~€100 but once i hear back from them ill update here. i would expect to pay around 50 quid to fix this including the part as long as nothing else has gone wrong. you could also try here and see if u can find a fan for your model https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/index.jsp
