Travelling in Germany with firearms

Just in case anyone's off to a World Cup or similar this year, this just out from the DSB:
New legal provisions for the transportation
of firearms and ammunition in Germany

The transportation of firearms from one place to another is only permitted when
    1. the firearm is not ready to fire,
    2. the firearm is not readily accessible and
    3. the transportation is in line with the need surrounding a special purpose or in its context.

    1. A firearm is ready to fire when it is loaded, that is when any propellant, projectile or cartridge that can be discharged from the firearm is contained in the breech or firing chamber of the firearm or in the cartridge magazine attached to or inserted into the firearm even if it is not cocked.
On principle a sport shooter must never transport his firearm loaded.

    2. Readily accessible is a firearm when it can be brought into firing position immediately. As a rule this is the case when it can be brought into firing position with few quick movements (rule of thumb: 3 movements in 3 seconds); e.g. when carried in a holster worn at the body. This applies also for the storage in an unlocked glove compartment. A trigger lock is not sufficient as the firearm can still be used to threaten.
Not readily accessible is a firearm when it is transported in a secure locking device, meaning the device is locked and not only closed. Therefore a gun case or a container with a lock is necessary. Principally the locked boot or the locked glove compartment is sufficient, too. In an open station wagon where you can access the firearm from the inside the firearm is to be considered accessible. Belts with number locks for bags or suitcases are only sufficient if the firearm can only be removed with great effort.
The transportation "in line with the need surrounding a special purpose" means that there must be a connection to the sport shooting. It does not depend whether the route – e.g. to the shooting range – is interrupted, e.g. by an overnight stay – be it with a fellow athlete or in a hotel.
Ammunition may be principally transported together with the firearm – even in a gun case.
Diabolos for air guns are not counted as ammunition in Germany.
Youths under 18 years of age are generally not allowed to transport any firearms and ammunition.
Any non-compliance with these provisions can lead to criminal procedure and to the confiscation of the firearms.
According to the recommendation of the German Shooting Sport and Archery Federation firearms should only be securely transported in a locked gun case.

    release date: march 2010

Not in so many words, no :o I've been trying to settle in and acquire some basic German skills before I foist myself upon people. I must inquire about range time and rifle hire, though.

Up til now I've been getting out of work after dark, so going anywhere hasn't really been much of an option. The Plan is commencing soon, though, so I'll be getting back into the swing of it soon enough :)
