Hey guys I've finally decided to take the plunge and get a safety razor and blades. I'm just looking for some advice on what to get to start me off. I've read the stickies and watched Mantic's videos and this is what I've come up with:

    Merkur 33c
Two Of A Kind DE Sample Pack
    Omega 13522 Value Boar Brush
    Ceramic Black Shaving Bowl
Taylors Of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream-Sandlewood

Does any have any opinions on these? I know they are not the best but I'm on a budget and don't want to get the good stuff until I know how to use it. Anyway what are the differences between a normal razor and an open-combed razor? And with the shaving cream, what is the story with the cream that comes in bowls how do you use that? (As opposed to pouring cream in a bowl and using a brush)

Don't get an open comb to start, a safety bar razor (non-comb) are easier to start with as the bar helps stretch the skin as you shave.

The TOBS Sandalwood is a good cream and easy to lather.
Just scoop a small amount (size of a 20 cent coin) out of the tub and
lather it up in the ceramic bowl with the brush.

Personally i would ditch the ceramic bowl and spend more on the brush. A cereal bowl, wide mug will do the job perfect have a look around your house.
The cream tubes are geared towards travel the bowls are more at home, you can either scoop a small bit out or dip the brush into it. You won't be
able to pour it, it doesn't have that consistency.

I would agree with padi, when i started using cream i was using a plastic rice bowl i got with a wok set, spend the money you save on the bowl on a decent badger brush. I would also suggest a styptic pencil or alum block, you will get a few nicks while getting used to the razor and discovering the direction your hair grows, and the block/stick will help to stop the bleeding.
