They're a great little car - buy one that's been cared for and you won't regret it. I'd buy privately myself.

i think so too, was going to dealers as wanted to trade in and have a guarantee,
but not many good mx5's in dealers at the moment,

do u think 10K is good for 03 one with soft and hard top and medium mileage?

I'd be expecting to pay close to €9k for this with no trade-in:

Though this would also be tempting even though the colour is not as nice imo:

If I were you I'd try and get it from a dealer with some kind of warranty. I got a 2000 Mx5 about six months ago and I've been having problems with a leaky roof - in the end it looks as though its been an easy fix but the repairs could have cost quite a lot.

With that in mind I would check for a few things: check for signs of water under both seats and in both footwells and down the back behind the seats, check that the cables on either side of the roof look in good condition and secure. Also check for water in the boot. The roofs on these cars can get replaced so check to make sure the heated rear window works. Water ingress seems to be the biggest issue (do a Google search on it for more info). Also from my own research at the time the recommendation seemed to be to go for the 1.8 version, that the 1.6 was "missing something". Also I was told to be careful if the car is an import that your insurance might be loaded so you might want to check with them first.

All in all I have to say I love the car! :)

    Great little car,

The 1.8 is the engine to go for without a doubt, there are plenty of nice private examples out there.

Don't mind the rubbish you may hear about it being a hairdressers car.

Surprised im the first to bring it up.

That nevada blue one has the hard top probably why its a little more expensive.
    Check the roof.
There was a great episode of wheeler dealers on the mx5 a couple of years ago. Worth a look to see what they say about them, although it was the older model they dealt with.

    EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=wheeler+dealers+mx5&search_type=&aq=0
There is also a great website which deals with MX5 parts, i assume its still around.

I have an MX-5 for 10 years, and the roof leaked, once.

$199 fixed that - new roof. 10 years on and it's still watertight.

Have a look at www.mx5ireland.com - someone on there is bound to know a good one or two for sale.

I saw a lovely blue 99/00 one in Tipperary for sale on Sunday, but damned if I can remember the name of the town !! (Somewhere between Clonmel and Limerick iirc........)

....ooh, that's nice - with the hardtop included, and a nice colour, it'd be the one I'd go for.

    I don't think it's over-priced, tbh.

Nope, got it for €8,000. 2000, 1.8, good condition and with about 70,000 miles on it. It wasn't cheap but it was good value considering I got a bit for trading in my old car.

No it was €6,800 + a car with no gear box. :)

Theres a lot of value out there - keep looking and don't be tempted to rush (if you can avoid it).

I've always liked the MR2 myself. Read this extract from a review, though:
    wrote:
Unlike the capacious second generation model, there is no boot to speak of in this car. Really. This surprises a lot of people, but check for yourself. Open the front bonnet, nothing there but a space saver wheel and disconcertingly, a rather clear view of the steering column and tarmac below, you can see why it’s so light. Open the rear engine cover, and there’s nothing back there other than engine and transmission, not even an Elise style mini boot. The only place to store luggage is the lockers directly behind the seats, you’ll get a pair of squishy bags in there, but you’d better pack light and getting them in there is not easy. Apparently the chief engineer for the car was asked why he had not included a boot and his answer was “because people would put stuff in it”. If that reply doesn’t make perfect sense and requires further explanation, then this is not the car for you.
    :D
