Self-destruct spiral

I've a great job, am not bad looking according to other people comments, have a great family and friends... on paper, the perfect life eh... yet somehow i seem to drawn to self destructive habits such as the abuse of alcohol and legal highs... i'm not an all out alcoholic or anything... on the surface i am holding it all together... but i have noticed that i do use alcohol when stressed to "blow off steam" and legal highs just so I can "forget myself" for a while. Despite the fact that no one apart from myself has noticed any problem with it (in fact no one knows i am using legal highs) I'm feeling like it could be a slippery slope...... i think the problem is with my self esteem, i don't feel I'm important and maybe that is why I am acting recklessly. I can't afford counselling and to be honest I'd rather sort this out myself.... could anyone suggest any good websites/books for self esteem?

( Edit: I use the term "I" many times in this but I'm going somewhere with it - it's not all about me )

All my councelling (not that I need it or ever really did, therefore dont avail of it anymore and only have done for three sessions in the past) and anti-depressants are free through the HSE through the drug refund scheme so I dont see why other people cant avail of this scheme too...

Anyway, sorting it all out yourself like I did is likely to be the most rewarding achievement you'll ever experience and the ego boost is overwhelmingly intense. There were various and varied techniques, much of which I invented myself that would eventually lead me off the peak in my depression to ultimately place myself in a position where I had enough willpower and mental strength to carry out more actions to further better my situation - but in terms of books and information online I cannot recommend enough the stumbleupon toolbar for firefox internet browser.

If you're not already usng Firefox download it from the links at the end of this post, then download the stumbleupon toolbar for which a link will be given below also. With it, you can do a keyword serch such as depression, self esteem and especially self-enhancement etc, and what it will do is it will actually direct you to the best pages on the internet that are most relevant to your search. Often you'll be directed to free audiobooks, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) videos, e-books and articles without many of which I found in my own searches I simply wouldnt be writing this today and recommending what I am...well, recommending.

If you've any questions done hesitate to ask. Take care and good luck my friend, you will get there through perseverance I promise you this.

    Stumbleupon Toolbar: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/138

**I've also just learned the toolbar is available for Internet Explorer, although personally I must sincerely recommend you steer clear of IE as the propensity for aquiring a virus through this browser is astronomically high...but whatever floats your boat: http://download.cnet.com/StumbleUpon-for-Internet-Explorer/3000-12512_4-10563493.html

You could try substituting slightly better habits for the same effect.

Doing a sport/going to the gym are excellent ways to blow off some steam.

Video games, books, etc. are excellent ways to forget about reality for a while.

Volunteering or traveling are great ways to get a different perspective from your day to day one for a bit.

If you feel the need to use alcohol and highs, your "picture perfect life" it just isn't. Something is probably missing, or it's not quite right, and definitely not perfect. I strongly believe that, while reading books and websites may provide some useful information, you can have an enormous gain from the assistance of a gifted professional - not only an objective look (which you may or may not have, especially if you want to "forget yourself") but also a professional approach and tools that work. Of course you can pull your own tooth out, but if needs be, wouldn't you rather have a professional do it properly? As for the money, you could try to find someone willing to do pro bono work with you - just make sure you state your agenda very clearly from the beginning so that you can feel you benefit even from the very first hour, or walk away and look for someone else.
You are the only "you" there is. Treat it well and lovingly, as you would anything else that's unique and precious! And get all the help you need, it's only normal - since we are all work in progress.
    Best wishes.
    Anna
