I am currently running a HP Pavillion dv1680 with xp, thinking of changing to Ubuntu when 10.04 comes out, the only issue i have is that i have an iphone (not jailbroken) and i know that i cannot download a copy of itunes that will work with ubuntu. So how can i sync my iphone with ubuntu???

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated....I've played around with a live cd of 9.10 and have decided that i definitely want to make the switch. The iphone issue is the only thing holding me back.

Apple doesn't make iTunes for Linux. Ubuntu 10.4 is supposed to have iPhone and iPod Touch support built in though.

i have itunes 9.03 running in latest WINE build in Ubuntu 10.04, bit slow to start up, but works fine,
10.04 will recognise your phone staraight away when you plug it in
you can also sync with rythembox media player which comes pre-installed, but i haven't tried
test out the 10.04beta its rock solid

I'm running 9.10. I have the iphone working alright, but only for music. While it transfers video files (gtkpod), there's a problem with the meta-data (images, series name, that kind of thing don't seem to be working, though you can set them alright in gtkpod).

If you're just gonna be using it for syncing music though it's bang on. At the moment I'm using a windows virtual machine in virtualbox to give me the meta-data through iTunes. If you already have a valid XP licence, this is an option for you too. I found the USB transfer rates of virtualbox were far *far* higher than on vmware.

Thanks for the replies, Will 10.04 sync all that needs to be synced? ie...contacts, ringtones (only way of getting them onto phone), calendar, music, pictures, or is it just music that it'll sync as Khannie pointed out? I use the iphone for everything so would need to be able to keep everything up to date in a back up in case anything were to go wrong with it.

Also i downloaded a live cd of 10.04 and i'm just getting a black screen when i try to use it, have burned it onto a couple of discs and still get the same issue.

Not sure about the contacts / calendar stuff.

You should try to md5sum the downloaded CD to make sure it didn't get corrupted during transfer.

I'd try this in windows: http://www.etree.org/md5com.html

Compare the output to the md5sum on the ubuntu site. Don't forget, 10.04 is beta at the moment.

have made the switch to 9.10, and it's working great....iphone syncing problem solved thanks to Google Sync syncs as you make the change, so your contacts and calendar are always up to date :D thanks again for all the help.

I am going to get scorned for this, but get yourself a Linux friendly MP3 player. It's not Ubuntu's fault that it won't sync. Apple clearly love obfuscating their products. Why the hell isn't an ipod treated as a mass storage device? Failing that, try rhythmbox. Plenty of iPods such work with that right out of the box, no configuration required. *Edit, glad to see you got it working in the end.*

Wouldn't scorn you for that. I think I said it on here before, but I wont be getting an Apple product again after all this fuppin' ridiculous hoop jumping. They probably don't care about that though.
