iPhone HD in the works?

Finally a bitta iPhone news, after the mountain of iPad news out this week.

So the latest 4G iPhone rumor is that it will be announced on June 22nd, and is being dubbed the iPhone HD.

This doesn't really surprise me as I thought HD output for the iPhone would be here by now. It will be interesting to see if the change any specs to the iPhone, such as a bigger screen (4" perhaps?), as it hasn't really changed cosmetically in the last 3 years.

Its odd that we've heard nothing on OS 4.0, or even 3.2 for the iPhone. Rumor is that 3.2 will be released for the iPhone on the iPad release date but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Seems they are doubling the screen resolution to 960x640 and adding a front facing camera for video chat.

    Jesus. I want one.

This could be faked, but its the only 4G iphone conept details out there. And to honest it looks just awful compared to the 3G/3GS.

Not sure about the removable battery, Apple has never offered such an option before, but I could be proven wrong.

Seen this a couple of years ago , even before the 3GS i think .

Look at the date at the end : 2008 .

I've seen that concept every year when a new iPhone is due.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a front facing camera either. Video calls never took off in Ireland (or any market for that matter) but if there's a company that can make it popular and a big deal, it's Apple.

Which would be great iPhone to iPhone, but pretty much rubbish every other way. Never saw the attraction to video calling myself.

Think how cool skype woul be though with a front facing camera.

Again I'm going to not read rumours/mock ups as I did with the iPad as I'll just end up disappointed :)

Anytime you see removable battery as a rumoured feature in the next iPhone, you know that rumour is bullsh*t.

I can't see there being any major form factor changes either.

Anytime I use Skype its to a landline or as gaming chat, so no benefit to me.

the tell tale sign of any mock ups of new iphones will be the inclusion of a micro usb charging point, is it not true that an EU court ruled that all manufacturers, including apple must use micro usb's to charge within the next 12 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

The removeable battery is something Apple will need to do eventually. There's an EU law requiring new handsets have user removeable batteries coming into force soon (If it hasn't already).

The mockup above looks like a hash between a Zune and an iPhone. Wouldn't believe it for a second.

Video calling will be huge though, and overdue. I know a lot of people don't understand/use/need it, but when I had my n97, it was a fantastic feature to have. And I look forward to being able to skype my family and friends when I'm out and about.

A larger screen on the Iphone 4G will be the only reason I'd upgrade and even that probably isn't enough of a reason.

Its hard to know what they'll throw in this time, but one thing is for sure, Apple have a way of making you take your credit card out of your pocket and buy their latest shiny cool gadget! :D

Do you think it will be a larger screen? I saw the HTC HD2 a few weeks ago and the screen is huge, almost to big for a pocket device, at some point screens will go from being a perfect size to being just that bit to big, there is a fair bit of wasted space around the bezel of the existing iPhone that could be filled in without making the foot print of the device larger.

I think the 2nd mock-up the jesus_thats_gre posted will be the closest as the form won't change much, Apple evolve their products over a number of years, they never seem to make major cosmetic changes unless they are announcing a brand new product (with the exception of the iPhone XL, aka the iPad)

Front camera and higher resolution screen and improved signal strength is really all I am hoping for, as the phone is almost perfect, until the iPhone I have never kept the same phone for more than 10 months before.
All the competition are hurling higher specs at their attempts to usurp the iPhone so Apple will undoubtedly up the specs a bit but it's how they implement the technology and the UI that always sets the iPhone apart form the competition so I can't wait to see what tricks they have up there sleeve's for the 4G.HD whatever it's called.

    +1 Victor.

I'm also hoping Apple incorporate the iPads screen rotation lock hardware switch. Nothing worse than being in bed, and the screen constantly flipping from vertical to horizontal.

Yeah - saw that concept before - looks amazing. Like the iPhone should look.

Still no mention of a goddamn RADIO though.

I dunno, I can think of a few worse things. :pac:

No, your right, a screen that's massive isn't what I'm looking for. If they moved the home button the the side and filled the entire front of the existing 3GS with a screen that would do me.

I think Apple know that if the screen gets to big, then what's the need for the IPad!

The problem with enlarging the screen is this - unless you make the device wider, the ratio will change, and you can't expect every app ever to make an update to compensate for this

What will be the story with existing 3gs customers if/when the new model comes out?

Will it be possible to get the new handset on your existing bill?

Only when you're due an upgrade, usually month 12 out of the 18

There's an App you could develop & make a few quid out of.

What I would like to see from the next gen iPhone in order of preference:

    - Better antenna to improve signal strength received
    - Better battery life
    - Ability to run certain apps in the background
    - Don't want device to get bigger, I agree that there is limited scope to increase screen size without an adverse effect on the existing App designs
    - Camera flash (LED or other)
    - Not 100% convinced that front facing camera is a must-have, video calling is not widely used. Maybe an enabled iPhone could trigger a revolution?
    - A faster processor is inevitable
    - Better resolution screen will not really change my life but it is probably inevitable, why would you want HD on such a small screen anyway? (Just my personal view)

    This is already doable.

You need to turn off your accelerometer.

Woohoo! I can't wait to watch 1280x720 movies on a 960x640 screen, with black bars on the top and bottom :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

You could do what I do....stretch it somewhat and crop it somewhat. I was inspired by the "smart" mode on Sony TV's which turn a 4:3 picture into 16:9 without destroying it completely.

edit: At encode time I just scale 4:3 to the 480x320. This is hardly ever noticeable. For 16:9 stuff I scale to 528x320 then crop to 480:320. Again, hardly ever noticeable.

It would require low-level hardware access, so you'd never get it app store approved.

The device can't really get bigger, there's a balancing act between it being a smart phone and a small laptop. A smartphone *must* fit in your pocket, otherwise it ceases to be a phone. If the phone was to get much wider, we'd be going into the realms of ridiculousness. It's already much bigger than most phones on the market. Higher resolutions would allow smaller icons and therefore more information onscreen at once.
Not 100% convinced that front facing camera is a must-have, video calling is not widely used. Maybe an enabled iPhone could trigger a revolution?
Video calling isn't widely used on mobiles for a number of reasons - cost, coverage, quality, etc - but it's becoming the next big thing on PCs and laptops. Teenagers in particular have grasped onto this in a big way and will spend hours video calling their mates over Skype.

The demand is there, the mobile device just needs to be able to tap into it properly. The biggest hurdle is that if I'm out-and-about, I don't want to have to hold the device in my hand to make a call, so people won't make video calls on the move.

I have been using Skype video a lot in the past few months (based away from home on a long term project) & I agree it is quite useful. I just don't see it being embraced for "on the move" use as you say.

A front facing camera is also handy for self-portrait photos of you/a few mates when there's nobody around to take them. :)

I want the video calling to come on board because my Mother can't use a PC to save her life. A Mac would confuse her even more. So if I get her an iPhone HD, or a Dell Mini5, she can skype the grandkids in the most user friendly method possible. Course I'd have to call over on a regular basis to top it up/charge it :D

AppleInsider are saying that OS 4.0 will include Multitasking, which they describe as being like Expose on OSX.

Great news if true, especially if the iPhone 3G and 3GS get it too.

Lots of evidence of iChat found in OS 4.0.

Interestingly 9to5mac claim that Video Chat could be incorporated into Games and Gamecentre.
