Dental work in Malta

This time two years ago I was told I needed a root canal and was told by my parents and friends to start saving....then I travelled on holidays to Malta and sussed out dentists over there. At the time my boyfriend needed fillings and a cleaning so we had a reason to attend one lady dentist and I could find out some more as well.

We sat in a waiting room similar to one you would find anywhere in Ireland. I perused the qualifications on the wall, all from UK and Maltese Universities...I accompanied him into the treatment area where I watched tv while he was prepped....all pretty standard, same as here....all except for one thing....cost......his cleaning on the first session cost €5 euro, again descaling, intensive flossing and polish. This was done by the dentist herself. On the second visit he had two fillings...costing €15 euros each.

When I discussed root canal treatment she was cautious in that she did not think coming over for a weeks holiday and getting the work done would be a good idea as I would need time to recover etc before going on a flight.....cabin pressure I suppose...anyway when I queried cost she informed me that it would cost in the region of 300 to 400 euros....

I got a cleaning as well while I was there....

Today my now fiance has informed me that he needs a tiny filling on the other side of his mouth from where the work was last done.....he has already checked out prices of flights etc and can get himself over and back and get his dental work done for cheaper than a visit to the dentist here....only yesterday did my father tell me that he paid 75 euros to a dentist in Limerick city to have his teeth cleaned......this country is still ripping off people.....I am heading to malta again this summer and intend getting all my dental work done there for years to come.....anyone out there interested in whitening???? the treatment cost €140 in Malta...

Did you check while you were there what someone doing your and your fiance's job is paid in Malta?. If it is less than you earn, do you feel you are ripping your employer off and would you be willing to take a pay cut to come into line with a maltese worker. Incidently the mimimum wage is €2 per hour and the average weekly wage is €120.00.

Did you notice if buildings cost the same to buy/rent as in urban areas here?, are rates/elctricity/insurance/wages/materials/vat/equipment/indemnity/tax/phone/stationery/postage etc the same?. What is the cost of living there?.

Wow you have discovered that things cost less in other countries with lower cost economies. I have called the media and they are arranging a press conference for this news flash......

I have PRSI and before christmas I had an exam, cleaning and filling for 45 euro in Cork City from an Irish dentist. If something goes wrong, he is only over the road and will always sort you out if you are in pain. When I broke my front tooth playing football last april, he did the root canal and a white cap over it for 400euro. I cant see why I would go all the way to Malta when the prices are so similar in this place.
Last week i had to change the 4 tyres on my car for the nct, get the tracking done and an oil/plug service. It was almost 600euro incl labour and vat and i will have to get it done again in two years!! The dentist said if anything went wrong with his filling within five years he'd fix it again for free. sound man. My GP can't even keep that promise. Come to think of it, either can the physio, the surgeon who fixed my ankle, the guy who fixed my boiler during the floods, the sattelite man from Sky and definately not my mechanic!
how much do tyres cost in Malta? will you check that out next time you're over? sound

You seem to have a kind and considerate dentist
Mine is very efficient but the prices I have paid out to date
and quoted are still remaining much higher than your experience
Its hard to understand the different prices quoted for the same job
    here in the south.

Again Lizzie, the internet makes it very easy to do wage comparisons in different countries, for illustration purposes would you mind posting your job description and perhaps that of your partner?. If the wages for your jobs are lower in the North, do you feel you are ripping off your employer and would you be willing to take a drop in waes to achieve parity with someone doing your job in another country where cost of living is lower?.

Davo, you're on the boards too early in the morning. I think you misread Lizzie's post. She is comparing her Southern dentist with buzzingnoise's dentist down in Cork .

I think the answer to her question is Cork dentists are really nice.

I am not trying to offend anyone rather endeavouring to have
    some dental stuff completed

For the record I am a mother of four young sons, one is handicapped so I have
no earning ability outside the home. This is a statement rather than a look
for sympathy I do not need. I cannot compare my job to anyone elses.
    It is priceless.

The difference in prices here in the south from
dentist to dentist is incredible never mind the North.

I am using savings to go to the dentist and have just been unfortunate
needing 2 root canals etc...hence my interest in varying prices.:)
