Interview for Receptionist position.

Today I got a phone call for a job I applied for yesterday evening, it's a receptionist position in a Dublin city hotel. I was wondering would anybody have any tips for this type of job as I have not had an official receptionist job before. I have held positions where I had to fill in for a similar role in the bank. I also volunteered as a rectptionist in the local citizens information centre. This is the first interview I have had in about 6 months and I am eager to do well tomorrow.

The next part of the job spec I am a little unsure about:

"To ensure that reservations are dealt with effectively and to carry out effective room merchandising to maximise room revenue."

From what I understand is that I would have to make reservations via phone or other and make sure the room is ready for that person when they arive?

Sorry if I this seems like a silly question, I am just a bit nervous and want to nail this tomorrow :).

Have you considered phoning the hotel - pretend to be interested in making a reservation and see what exactly they ask or try to sell you.

From that you will get a good idea of the hotel's policy.

    Best of luck tommorrow.

I have thought about making some sort of inquiry, I may do that in the morning :) Get a general idea of how the receptionist is on the phone. Thanks for the tip :)

Merchandising = selling in this case I think.

Extolling the virtues of deluxe as opposed to standard rooms (or whatever), so that people take the one that gives the most profit. Suggesting that if people extend their staying Bally-yourTown, they could do XXX tourist activity after all. Allocating people travelling on business to the highest profit room that their company will pay for. Generally, being cunning to make as much as you can, without being so cunning that you annoy customers and lose business.

(Anyone in Galway City want a cunning receptionist? I'm seeking work .... ;) )

It went shít. I am crap at interviews. Mock interviews I normally do good, the jobs club and guidance councillor tend to tell me that I should nail the interview, and I will get it no problems etc etc, but when it comes to the interview I make a balls of it, am pissed with myself. Sick of it...

    Sorry to hear that!

I would not worry too much, put it down to learning experience, nothing you can do about it now.

Even if you had a fab interview does not mean you will get the job, too many applicants.

Just keep applying for jobs, you never know the next interview might be the job for you!

    Good luck.

My last one for a permenant role was about 18 months ago, if not more. I wouldn't mind being so crap at interviews if I had more of them to practice. That way I could improve, this is just not helping at all. Buh bye confidence...

Don't beat yourself up too bad! Job hunting SUCKS!!

I know... I'm unemployed too! so are 400,000 + people..

Practice your interviews with friends, get some basic interview questions off the internet, like tell me about yourself? What can you bring to this position? Blah blah... Write down 4 or 5 lines, short & too the point... so at least you have something in your head to say.

Read the job spec and have answers ready, what are they looking for.

Would not do you any harm going to a few recruitment agencys.. (I know they don't have many jobs but at least they would interview you too and might tell you what you need to improve on)

You never know the next interview might be it! :)
