IT World suggest that the general 3D capabilities have been boosted, and new drivers installed for ATI based Macs. Could be good news for those of us waiting on Steam to arrive.

    757MB for me  (27", 3.06GHz iMac) - 18 mins on a 6.5 Mb connection.

Tried to install this update and it failed. Worse still I can't get my iMac to reboot at all. Turn it on and I keep getting a list of problems towards the upper left of the screen, and also a pop up box in different languages telling me to hold down the power button until off and then reboot. I've been doing this but it just returns me to the same screen.

Seems to be a kernal panic. The main message is " version mis-match between kernal and CPU pm"@/sourcecache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12/ofsmk/i386/pmcpu.c:720

I've tried to reboot in safe mode but it won't. I've disconnected any external harddrives etc. Also inserted my Snow Leopard disc to see if that would boot up but no joy. Anyone got any ideas?

Weird that it won't boot off the install disc. Install any RAM recently?

Are you able to get the boot up/start up menu when you hold down alt/option key?

Finally got it to boot off the install disc and performed a permissions repair and a disk repair. Rebooted but still stuck o. The same screen. I'm thinking of maybe doing a full erase and install? I have the discbacked up to an external hard drive through time machine so I presume it's straight forward enough? (Ive recovered ndividual file before from time machine but never a full volume).

As in resetting the NVRAM/PRAM? I've done that but it still doesn't solve the issue.

No, When you said you were unable to boot to install disk I was wondering if you could get to the startup menu, where it asks to boot to Mac HD or DVD.

If you have a backup I would just do an erase and install

The best thing about this update is the touched-up background image of the snow leopard - there's now no visible blood around the mouth area :p

Okay I did a erase and install and all seemed to be going ok. Have restored from Time Machine and everything is there. The only problem is most of my apps arent working, including all the Apple ones as far as I can see. Safari, Mail, iPhoto, Garageband etc wont launch. Heres what I get when I try to launch Mail:

    Process: Mail [448]
    Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
    Identifier: com.apple.mail
    Version: ??? (???)
    Build Info: Mail-10770000~4
    Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
    Parent Process: launchd [113]

Apologies if Im hijacking this thread a bit.

Edit: Sorry, just rebooted again to see if that would help. Seems to have sorted it out. Thanks for the input. I`ll stick with 10.6.2 for now I suppose.

I'm having the same problem as you adox. I just updated my iMac and have the gray screen telling me to reboot. I don't have everything backed up though so I may be in trouble.

In case anyone has the same problem - I read on another forum to just reinstall Snow Leopard from the disk and this seems to have done the trick. Now I have to install the update by manual download of the combo update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭CivilServant

Dunno why people are so eager to install new updates. Wait for the reviews! I'm still on 10.5.8, enjoying the old expose :)

I've never experienced any issues installing updates, but I would never install one without a recent backup. If you want to be extra safe though you should always download the combo update.

I love this update :) Before this, my OS caused Word to cancel my shut down everytime and I can finally back up my disk keys onto my hard drive again without error stopping it. Those were long months of waiting!! *Happy dance*
