Installed incorrect RAM

Hi all, not sure what damage I have done but hopefully someone here can help me.

I tried to install some DDR2 ram into my sisters laptop in order to try and spped it up a bit. She only had 2 x 256mb of RAM and I had 2 X 512 which I had taken out of my own laptop. 1st card went in fine but the second one would not fit, so I replaced the original. Machine would not boot. Replaced the original 2 cards and only then did I notice that my replacement cards were DDR2 while the orignal were DDR. Now the laptop will not boot, it powers up and I can hear the hard drive spinning and also checking the disk drives however it goes no further than this. There is nothing on the screen.

What kind of damage might I have done and how do I go about repairing it?

    Moved to Laptops.

Odds are you've managed to either fuse the mainboard's chipset or memory controller or (most likely) caused permanent physical damage to the SODIMM slots (pretty sure DDR2 is keyed to prevent fitting in DDR1 SODIMM slots, you probably busted the lower slot forcing the first DDR2 module in).

As for repairs... if you can't get it to boot then odds are you're looking to buy your sister a new laptop :o

ouch! Have you tried booting with just one of the original ram sticks in? Do this with both sticks and try each stick individually in both slots and then post back.
if still no boot you might have damaged both original ram sticks by esd or both ram slots but i would wager on the first one.
