What's the best way to prepare for exams here?

I know it's going to change from lecturer to lecturer, but how much emphasis is usually placed on outside studying (that is, studying material outside the notes and what was covered in class). Are they really strict with grading?

At least in my course, a lecturer can't assess you on something they haven't covered. You are expected to study in your own time and be prepared for exams. Many courses also have continuous assessment.

It depends on the lecturer. The only guaranteed way to get a high mark is to study and know all of your module's material.

Past exam papers. DCU allows you, like the leaving cert, to study for the exam...

Didn't really work for us last semester after the lecturers were told "your exams are too predictable; students can pass just by doing past papers, so you should make them cover everything".

    Hooray.

I find taking the lecturers notes and condensing it helps.

Followed by carefully adding in bits s/he's said along the way from in class lectures.

Also, colour and humour helps! :) If someone says something funny in class etc, put it in your notes, helps to remember. >.<

    Or at least with me......

Depending on the course, you can pass simply by memorizing the past papers.

Much the same as anywhere else, keep on top of material during the semester :)
