    Hey guys, looking for a bit of advice if I may :D

    Last August I was let go because I couldn't keep up with meeting targets :o However, I was going back to college to do a masters anyways in the September so it wasn't really a big deal and I left on good terms with no ill fealings (that I know of)

    I have two interviews coming up and my question is, as I was let go will I be able to get a reference from them?? My then manager was also let go shortly after me and my direct supervisor has since left the company.

    These up coming interviews are very important to me and would get a career started for me, if I get either job that is!!

    I guess I'm just stressed with this masters and the grim possibility that I'll be on the dole in a few months :confused:

    Any insights would be very helpful!

    Do you know what is on the official record in the HR dept? I suppose under the data protection act you would have a right to know.

    Not really sure... I'm guessing it would say something like I was let go because I wasn't meeting my targets. As far as I know regarding references, the manager just gives them and doesn't contact hr. But as I said he's gone too :rolleyes: Pity cos I got on well with him and the whole letting me go was informal and he wished each other well before I left

    You might have to contact HR there to get a reference then but they can only go by the information they have then.

    Do you have a contact number for him? I've used referees who are no longer with the company. If the person checking up on the references is any good, they might verify this with the HR department, but a lot of times they're quite lazy.

    Given that you were let go due to performance, it might actually be in your favour that the managers are no longer still with the company. Given that the two people you would ask for are neither working there, if you have a contact for them put them down as references, and just mention that they have both moved from the company also, but that they are familiar with your work. given the way things are, its not a strange thing to find people have moved on, so the new company wouldn't necessarily be suspicious provided they were satisfied that the references you mention were actually your managers at one time or another.

    Either get in contact with an manager you were friendly with or ask the company to send you a written reference.
    This is generally pretty generic saying you worked there from a to b.
    If it says anything else then you can look at other options.

    Both should be fine.
