Goldust; Has It Run It's Course?

Can I just start by saying that I love Goldust and this is not a thread attacking him. The title refers to the fact that Goldust has been with the WWF on and off since 1995 and it seems that there are a few wrestlers in this bracket - who wrestled in the mid 90's and come back to the WWE every few years - but the WWE never seem to know what to do with them beyond their initial return

The British Bulldog, for example, originally "returned" in Sep 1999 and started to fight as a main event wrestler....after No Mercy 1999 he was suddenly demoted to mid card and his personal problems aside, the WWE just didn't seem to know what to do with him

The Big Bossman suffered the same fate after the whole Corporation storyline died down and the Al Snow/Big Bossman stuff had ended. He had a great match with Undertaker at Wrestlemania 15 and then just sort of fell back into the mid card ranks.

Mideon, who was wrestling as Dennis Knight since the mid 90's, was given a stupid gimmick of coming to the ring naked and then just drifted off television. Tiger Ali Singh came back to manage Lo Down and then just couldn't get that gimmick running. So he sued the WWE. Mr Perfect and Haku both spent 6 months after their initial return during their respective Royal Rumble's doing very little.

I just think there are some wrestlers, like Goldust, who should stop being thrown around from brand to brand and given a chance to wrestle for proper titles...at least the chance anyway.

    Does anyone else agree?

I think Goldust/Dustin Rhodes problem is that he is just not very good. The Goldust gimmick was mildly interesting around 1996 but he doesn't have the wrestling ability to back it up, especially nowadays. He is just so slow and lumbering. The whole movies obsessed idea is good and can lead to some OK promos, but there really is only so far he can go with it. Any attempt by WWE or TNA to alter the character has never worked. It is a combination limited character idea and wrestler.

Plus he just looks like an idiot head-to-toe in gold. It is one of those things that makes me cringe when friends who are not into wrestling see him.

The main reason why Goldust is still wrestling is that he's there to put over the younger stars. When Sheamus first joined he feuded with Goldust gaining experience and being put over by him. It's a cycle, the older guys put over the younger guys.

I think almost the complete opposite. Dustin had all the talent in the world in the ring and would go through phases of being superb but too often it was obvious he didn't care enough and put little effort in. Thought he turned himself around again recently and was performing really good on ECW.

As for the Goldust character, he's still over to a degree and at this stage of his career there's little point switching it up now. He's a good hand to have around to put new guys over.

Goldust is one of the most underated wrestler around. He was on fire in ECW until it closed.

His problem is that the with the exception of his first year and then the Val Venis feud his character is limited to being a cartoon. He shot himself in the foot by being so funny with Booker I think because no nobody can take the character seriously.

He also blows hot and cold. Black Reign anybody?

    THIS.

Goldust is never going to change the world of wrestling in 2010, but he's a great pro to have and knows how to tell a story and help a rookie in five minute matches. You need guys like him really.

Goldust is vastly vastly underrated. His last run in ECW was absolutrly fantastic and he was putting on good to great TV matches on a weekly basis against the younger members of the roster.

Anyone who says he "was never very good" is talking a load of boll*x in my opinion. Hes an excellent worker, who played a cutting adge persona in the 90's that was a decade ahead of its time. Yes he's had sh*t periods like in TNA, but I don't blame him for not being motivated in that environment.

In short Dustin Rhodes and Goldust are fantastic.

I only found Goldust's in-ring work 'acceptable' during the Attitude Era, i was a fan of his TAFKA Gimmick in the late 90s. He's a steady hand but an old one that doesn't draw lasting appeal from the crowd. I imagine that the fans wouldn't get behind him unless he was given some stellar booking and adequate screen time, something WWE doesn't wanna do. WWE do hire him a lot for some reason. Maybe they just like having him around. Maybe Dusty's got great politiking skills.

Anyway Dustin's got a very solid, unique character that is really open for creative skewing; any kind of outlandish behaviour can be easily believed with Goldust. I think WWE just want to use him for any funny writing they come up with.

That said i think he should be rewarded since he looks like he's in the best shape of his career right now. Given that he's 15 years older than when he started in WWF and he looked like Missy Elliot in a trash bag in TNA, he should get some kind of program.

Really the best i can see WWE giving him is maybe something with Cody where Cody goes over, or tagging Goldust with some quirky new talent.

It is nice to see him in the new game at least, I didn't like the way they kept leaving him out, maybe another sign they consider him a bigger star

    I think he#s awesome.

whenever I'm on you tube I always waste away a good 15-20 mins watching his stuff.

I'd love to see WWE give him one major last major push.. when you think of some of the people who've had multiple pushes over the years, surely he deserves another one

Goldust is perfectly fine as he is. Not everyone should be or needs to be pushed. WWE need someone to fill in that Val Venis shaped hole in their roster. Someone who will have short entertaining matches with opponents of all levels. That is Goldust's job, and it is a very important one.
