the poles that support the nets behind the goals of my local club have broken about 10 ft above the ground . this was due to severe winds last monday.

has this happened to anybody elses pitch ?

how did your club solve the problem?

i would also appreciate any ideas to preventing it happening again

eg. increase from 2 poles to 3
put motors on the nets and pill them in every evening
have a way of dropping the nets when the wind is too strong

This also happened in my club but it was caused by the wind entangling the nets in overgrown branches behind the goals. The branches must be cut first and then either repair (as fishermen do) or replace the nets I suppose.

it wasnt the nets that tore, the poles snapped

Christ that must have been a hurricane! What sort of poles were ye using? We use high tension ESB poles and if the wind is strong enough to crack them then the nets will be the last of our problems! Rebuilding the dressing room would come first !

im not sure exactly what kind of pole they are. there solid timber and about 14 inch diameter , identical to ones ive seen in other pitchs. the strange thing is , the wind didnt seem exceptionally bad , no lifting slates off the roof.

its also strange that it is the second time that this has happened , and both times they fell in opposite directions

but definitely the quality of the poles seems to be the problem
