Just wondering if anybody knows if there is such a thing as medical leave of abscence. I paid my subscription for the year only to find out a week later that on medical grounds i can't play golf for 8 months or so. Contacted my golf club but they haven't got back to me.

Dotzie, I'm nearly sure that you have to apply to your G.C for leave of absence, generally it's granted on foot of either illness or if you were say working abroad for a period of time. Letter to Sec Manager will put you straight

Unless it is written into the clubs constitution, a club is under no obligation to grant a leave of absence for any reason, but may do so if it considers it appropriate, in this case it is obliged to suspend the individuals handicap and return the players card to the GUI, alternatively it can leave the card but the fee must be paid to the GUI

this is the ILGU policy, not sure if the GUI is the same, but I would think they would have similar policies.

Your right curly the policies are similar and it would appear that the card no longer needs to be returned to the GUI however the leave of absence is at the clubs discretion

Golf clubs are keen to keep their members - obviously - so I'd suggest getting a doctor's letter and arranging a meeting with the General Manager to explain the situation. If you're out for 8 months, offer to pay for the final third of the year that you can play. You may lose your card, but for 8 months, your continuing membership is far more important to you and your club.

I can't see them not agreeing to be honest. Golf clubs need all the members they can get nowadays.

hi - my club has granted me 1 year leave of absence, however I must become a Pavilion (bar) member for around €300.

    they state:
    • The Management committee consider this concession to be a “Leave of Absence” from golf. As such the guidelines issued by the GUI apply.
i understand i can't play in my home club...but can i pay green fees and play in other golf clubs?

Of course you can pay and play in other clubs, why do you think you wouldn't be allowed to do that?.

Your h/cap is suspended so you can't compete, play open competitions etc.
Doesn't mean you can't play the game.
