this comes for a few other threads i've seen around and even conversations i've had too

wats your ideal section set up
9 lads all round use so must be ready for anything

    FSG
is as it is with the gpmg for one and two
2 ic should have an fn for longer range but precise shooting but all so be armed with a pistol for CQB (down side to the lenght)

assault group should have a LMG (bren mk4,minime or the likes)
    2 x m 203 launchers
I/C M4 with a few bits and pieces
radio man standard riffle of choice
and finally the remaining man should have a drum mag fitted to his riffle angain of choice

section carries 2 types of ammo so it wont make a difference be it 7.62 or 5.56
the only new thing is a little 9 mm but the I/C takes that hims self

wats your opinions and likes and dislikes
or would you like to see 10 men sections again or drop to 8 man sections

    Good OP Slapper2.

I've raised something similar in the carnage that passes for a thread I'm
    responsible for starting.

    For the record:
Please do not insult Slapper2 by suggesting he is chums with me. His post has an overlap that's all-been also raised or implied in others.

    Also I don't airsoft/paintball or whatever.
And I don't wargame or PC game either as HK suggested prior.

Here's what I do like to read and its relevant to Slapper2's concerns. From a BA officer circa 2007: "Improving the capabilities of the section from a British perspective. Some interesting views, especially on weight.

    Your friendly AVgas.

Enjoy your tipple Iceman, old chap. Didn't mean to be sharpish with you.

Wish I could serve my country the same way right now...BUT.....
    I am otherwise occupied.

Yes the RUSI chappies are rather a rum lot and take it all seriously...what....rather old boy?

Its a bit of Biggles and a bit of Buck Rogers. However, we could do with a bit of it maybe?

BTW the fuzzies have considerably moved on since the days of Rourke's Drift..(but you know that...).

Those blighters the Hezbullocks cut rather a dash with this item in 2006 I believe.

Won't get away with bull's wool and bolt actions out there anymore.

    Av'n'the-gas.

dont think so ,well not online anyway
but at the same time this conversation has probily been had in most fca units :D

no sure the ak is older and still one of the most popular weapons around mount a decent sight on the fn and you have a savage weapon to fire from distance

my mentality is your FSG drops fire support and they are tumping rounds down range with the gpmg so why not give the 2 i/c the chance to take more acurate shots form there too tis hard to bring the gpmg to bere on one little oppotunity tarrget mid fire where as the 2 i/c should really be blasting away anyway this just gives him better accuracy

coming at it from a football perspective i'd say the classic

    4-4-2 :D

    two sections of four men

and a fireteam of two with the GPMG,but don't burden these two with any other rilfes, just a handgun each for self defense

    first section

    NCO
    rifleman
    radioman
    rifleman with 40mm UGL

    second section

    2 i/c
    rifleman
    marksman with a 7.62 DMR
    gunner with a 5.56 minimi

maybe a little off topic but, i was wondering why the irish defence forces hasnt adopted the 8 man section with 2 fire teams like the british and americans have?

and which is better, the 9 man way with a dedicated fsg and manouver group or the 8 man way with two flexible fire teams.

Probably because we're based on a light infantry model - if we were deploying from IFV's we would have support from the vehicle and consequently less requirement for an FSG. Space inside the vehicle is also a concern - our Mowags are roomier than most but they're used as APC's and armed with 0.5's. Most IFV's have a 25 or 30 mm cannon whose ammo takes up more room.
