can anyone tell me roughly what one should expect to pay in fees for a horse in training. I was quoted €1200 a month would this be expensive?

Most trainers' fees will vary slightly but from what I've heard anything from €800 or €1,000 upwards would be pretty average. I worked in a small yard a while back and they charged €800 per month, which was cheaper than some of the other yards in the area, the rationale being to undercut the bigger yards in the hope of attracting owners for cheaper fees.

Also bear in mind that some trainers' fees may include wormer/farrier and some veterinary charges as well as fees for taking horses away for work, though this is probably not too common so make sure you find out before.

Have you a horse nero caesar or just considering getting one?

The smaller national hunt guys charge €25-30 a day (€750-900 a month), with mid tier charging €30-40 and the top trainers charging €40-60. Other costs can be a couple of hundred a month. I've heard a few mid tier charging €1,000 all in and remember, you pay for what you get. Our trainer has shown me his costs and his feed and insurance costs have gone up, as have his employee costs (from the budget) so if fees are dropping it is either coming straight off the trainers profit or they need to reduce quality of feed and staff.

the first thing i would do is get it vetted by one of the top guys before you even think of giving it to a trainer it will save a lot of money and hardship in the long run

Just so you know before you jump into leasing any old horse, our trainer has been approached by a number of breeders to lease mares who they want to hold onto in the long term but don't want to incur the training and racing costs. His view is simple, get them to four weeks from a run.....give them to me for two weeks and if I like them, we start paying and if we don't we send them back. That way you get knowledge at no cost and if it's any good you keep it. Must say, it's a good policy if you're interested in leasing. He had no trouble finding owners to take two of them.
