Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone who did EOS or Microbiology in 2nd year can add their opinions here.
I need to pick my 2 optional subjects for 2nd year Marine Science (Statistics and Intro to Oceanography are compulsory) and I'm torn between Microbiology and Earth & Ocean. Despite the you'll-never-get-a-job scaremongering, I will be choosing Zoology as one of my choices,as that's what I'm really interested in, so I want something that goes well with that.
It's a tough choice to make, as I've had a whole year of EOS, including labs, and about a month of Microbiology lectures with no labs, so it's a really skewed comparison - Microbiology seems really interesting, but I havn't done enough to be sure. EOS sounds like it'd be good, but that dept seem particularly good at self-promotion so I'm a bit wary.
In EOS I'd be doing Fundamental Skills in EOS I and Sediments and the Biosphere. In Micro, The Microbial Cell and Microbes and the Environment. Anyone know what they're like?

In the same boat as ya, I'm repeating 1st yr marine and trying to decide what subjects to choose. From what I've heard Zoology is very hard with a large fail rate so I'm not keen on doing it.

I'm in 2nd year science and doing both zoology and microbiology as well as Botany. Both courses this year had a high fail rate of about 70% but myself personally got a very good grades in both
I'm no great brain, have 4 kids and work part time but worked hard and consistently throughout the year to do well. To do well in zoology, you really do need to be working quietly on it throughout the year!!

Of the both subjects I find the Microbiology easier.

The zoology in the 1st semester was tough as the whole range of phylum covered got to be repetitive at times but 2nd semester is more varied covering fish, reptiles, birds, mammals and then an introduction to molecular biology which was a great overlap with the Microbiology course!!

In 3rd Science. Did Bot, Zoo and Seds and Bios for 2nd year. Doing Bot and Zoo this year. Nothing easy about ny but put in the work and youll be fine. Seds and the bios is an excellent course in 2nd year. Especially paleontology aspect. Excellent teaching methods and labs. Took another subject tis year instead and really wished I stuck with Seds and Bios. missed it. Good Luck with your studies. ;)
