DIY Replace steering column in Corolla

I've just had my car broken into by some inept joyriders.

The car's starting but they busted my steering column. I was told it was handy enough to change, but looking online it seems like it's a biggish job.
Can anyone tell me if it's do-able for someone with almost no car maintenance experience or tools and has anyone any idea what a steering column on a 96 corolla might cost from a scrap yard?

It only needs to get me back to the scrap yard - I don't fancy shelling out to get it town away.

    Cheers for any help.

No idea, but I'm sure most decent scrapyards would be able to lift the car. If it's worth their while taking it, I wouldn't expect to be paying them to do so.....

Changing the column seems like an awful lot of work just to scrap the car, tbh.
