Without being smart, you haven't given us alot of information to work with. You need to answer a couple of questions for us to be able to give you any advise:
    1. How often do you plan to play?
    2. How much do you want to spend?
    3. Is it essential for you to start out with all the clubs or would you rather start with some Irons and Woods, and gradually add more clubs?
    4. Are you left or right handed (very important as lefty clubs are harder to find).

Once you've answered these (there may be a few more but its 3am and I'm a little tired) I'm sure plenty of people here will help you.

    Regards
    Ian

You can get some good deals on new starter sets from places like McGuirks, where they will give you a bag, the clubs, a trolley etc. These can work out quite cheap for a decent starter set, which is all you would really need at this stage.

There are second hand sets floating around if you wanted, but I would feel that one of the starter sets is a better bet at this stage.

I think you should go with your mates advice and get some 2nd hand clubs.
Starter sets are a false economy, they can be OK but if you play any bit regularly, you will soon want to upgrade.
