Having your 'space'

    Hi all,

I've been living at home for a while now, one main reason for this is that I have a room where I can make a reasonable amount of noise and don't have to be hyper-sensitive to the others living with me. I do production and a bit of recording [mainly guitar amps].

The problem is that I'd like to move out and go to a city where there is a bit more going on. How have you guys found your space without renting an entire house or booking studio time? How do people get around this in general? I have no country or city in mind yet.

I've had band rooms in the past but they have to be shared to be affordable at least in cork.

If this seems like an obvious question, I'll have you know that I have no musician friends :D

    I'd say most people don't. A musician's life is a tough one.

In my experience, and others experiences that Ive heard, you gotts look around hard and suss out the immediate neighbours. Luck also plays a huge part, so eh... best of luck to you man in your search!

Obviously, apartments are more likely to have thin walls between them, and houses are generally more expensive, but maybe look at a detached house share and hope you get good roommates!

from reading your post it seems that most of your sound levelwould be coming from guitar amps? if so would you consider amp modelling hardware like a podxt?
i know the purests amongst us would say it is hard to beat a good valve amp properlt mic'd.
But with modelling you can get a good sound and record direct.
    its a different solution....

I live in an apartment so I'm somewhat restricted in terms of the noise I can make. I use a very small tube guitar amp (3 or 4watts) that can get overdriven at reasonable levels. When recording bass I usually use a DI out on my bass head or record direct. It's a bit of a pain but I'm used to dealing with having to play or record at lower levels.

I found a solution. Deaf housemates!

My soloution is actually kind of funny. Three out of four of my band mates live together. We love it. We're all girls so it's fun. (Bands called Very Angry Girls, but we're not that bad...we just like that people call us V.A.G) We write/rehearse whenever the mood takes us, along with scheduled rehearsals with our lead guitar player. We live in this kind of lofty flat. Our kitchen and living room is upstairs. It's one big open space. We've cabs in the wall, drum kit plus mics/amps set up at all times in one part of the space. We have gigs in our house sometimes. We live in the center of Limerick city but have only one neighbour who comes and goes. We play every day and have only had one complaint in a year. It's ideal!!! :):):) It would drive me nuts to have to rent a space and drag gear around!! It's enough doing it for gigs!
