Hi, i'm planning on going to NY for the summer with some of my friends who are heading on J1's. I have a green card as i was born in the US but my family moved back to Ireland soon after. Am i correct in thinking that i don't need to get a J1? Will i need to get any sort of work visa before i travel and if not is it just a matter of applying for a social security card when i get over there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Green cards expire, you have to maintain your residency in the US in order to maintain your greencard. Here is some info on maintaining permanent residence.

However you say that you were born in the US, that should make you a citizen, and you should have a US passport not a green card. In that case you must travel to the US on your US passport and you probably already got assigned a SSN when you were born.

If it does turn out that you are a ciizen:

    1) If you are male you are required to register for Selective Service

    2) US citizens are taxable on your worldwide income. You can discount about $91,000 per year if you live abroad but if you earn over a certain threshold (something around $30,000) you are required to file a tax reurn to the IRS. Since you are a student (I presume as you are asking about J1) this probably doesn't apply to you yet. But beware if you win the Lotto, Uncle Sam will want his share!!

I think the IRS could use that as their tagline for a new expatriate tax gathering initiative
"Having fun abroad? Beware! If you win the lotto, Uncle Sam wants his share!"

I would literally cut off my little finger for a U.S passport, you are very lucky to have the right to work in the EU and the U.S.
