    Hi,

My doctor has just prescribed my Lexapro 10mg, for depression, I was just wondering if anyone else has taken these before, and if so what side effects if any were experienced?

    Thanks

You are best off talking to you doctor to be honest, also read the leaflet that comes with them. What I found taking them was for the first week or so as I got tired in the evenings I'd get a kind of hot prickely sensation across my back and shoulders, it wasn't uncomfortable so nothing to worry about. Also noticed that while I could get it up I couldn't climax. All in all though nothing bad.

Had a chat with the doc, he just explained that all meds have side effects, read the leaflet, and it sounds terrifying. So was just wondering about anyone else's experience.

    Cheers

DONT LOOK IT UP ON THE NET.

Rule #1 when going on medication.

You will just freak yourself out. These are a small amount of people making a large amount of noise.

I haven't read the leaflet in quite a while but the serious side effects where minute. Something like a one in a million chance. At the end of the day, the doctor recommended them, if they did pose any significant risk they'd be pulled from the shelf pretty fast and they do help a lot with depression. My advice if the doctor said the take them then do just that.

Read the leaflet. I got every single side effect on the list. I am not saying you will. If you have already started the course then you should be fine. I felt ill within an hour of taking the first one.

And under no circumstances drink while on them. Not even a little bit. Im not boasting but normally I can drink quite a bit without getting drunk but while on them my tolerance for it went out the window and after a 2 pints I was hammered. Also did some crazy things and got crazy thoughts.

I dont mean to freak you out, those were my experiences with them. Like I said if you have already started the course and have not felt anything major then i wouldnt worry.

just got the tabs this morning. Going on holiday tomorrow, and not sure if i should start taking them or not, when i'm off in a foreign country. Specially with that thing about the drink. Wouldn't be much of a holiday. No drink, floppy d*ck, probably come back more depressed than when i left.

Talk to your doctor. Tell him/her your going on holiday and ask what they think. In my opinion, depression is caused by physical and/or emotional experiences, and that the best treatment is find out what is/was the experience and try to deal with it whether by counseling or not is up to the individual. I think a holiday particularly somewhere warm would be as good for your overall mood than the pills.

depression is being caused by redundancy, huge crippling debts, and marraige breaking up. Going on a "family holiday" with the missus and kids, as we'd booked it when times were better. Don't want to ruin the holiday for the kids walking round like a zombie for the first week, no wine with dinner, and if i was to get herself drunk and get lucky, not being able to get it up.

Fair enough. Well none of us is a doctor, so you should contact your doctor and get their advice.

In my opinion though, I think anti-depressants are handed out far too easily by GPs these days. A holiday and spending time with your family I think will make you feel alot better. Particularly if you get herself drunk ;)

einsam, talk this over with your GP. In the meantime I'm closing this thread as you have one already open in the Long term Illness forum. No need for a duplicate here :)
