Waterford, Co. Kilkenny (Google Map)

Can anyone explain why Waterford City is described as being in Co. Kilkenny on Google Maps?

I wrote to notify them, but I got no response.

As Google have a HQ in Dublin, I suspect some Kilkenny person working there is up to mischief.

Please dont turn this in that the normal Waterford v Kilkenny debade, that has been done to death on here numerous times.

I am going to leave this run as I think its a valid question the OP makes. Hopefully someone will be able to get an answer out of Google.

This is strange because they did correct this error a while ago.

It's not exactly Google's fault. You are wasting your time contacting their Dublin office. It's not some Kilkenny lad's fault either.

Google get their map data from Tele Atlas:

On June 30, 2008 Tele Atlas announced a five-year agreement to continue to supply data to Google Maps.

I did this ages ago and the Co. Kilkenny problem was resolved, though I am not claiming credit for that. I'm sure loads of others did the same as me.

Google gets a lot of its data from TeleAtlas but not all. The last time Waterford appeared to be in Kilkenny, I contacted Google but this feature seems to have been replaced by a Wiki style process. I've contacted TeleAtles and Navteq to get the M9 and Waterford bypass onto sat navs ASAP

Though google has useful features, like directions, I think the maps from open street map are better and more up to date.

There seems to be a long-standing issue with county boundaries on google. They're in the right place, but interperated strangly. Another example is New Ross, also described as being in KK, and part of the town spills into KK. I informed google months ago, but nothing has happened.

Unfortunately now tho, the title Waterford is gone! When you zoom in you can see the other cities but no waterford! lol. Waterford the city doesnt exist, its just various places in Co. Waterford! Oh Google!

When you zoom out it has every city, except Waterford, and then when I zoom in a bit it shows Carrick and Tramore, but not Waterford

I noticed this before, and I think I know why it happens. It also used to list Dublin as Dublin, Co.Fingal. What I think it is doing, is taking the most Northerly point in the city, and saying that's the county it's in. That's what I reckon anyway.
