I've been meaning to listen to these guys for a while, but only ever checked out Popular Songs. It was nice enough, but I get the impression they've done much better.

I also get the impression that the albums are quite varied... can anyone recommend a good place to start?

They are a fantastic band although i wasn't a huge fan of "popular songs", give "i'm not afraid of you and i'll kick your ass"(close enough to the title) a go. It has a good range of nice pop ditties to slow somber numbers to complete guitar freak outs

Start with 'I can hear the heart beat as one'.

Start with I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One. It's one of my favourite albums of all time, stunning music.

    Try this on for size:

Also - if you get a chance to see them live grab it, they're fantastic!

So many great albums, so many great songs...

Whether sweet ballads or 10+ minute noisy wig-outs, Yo La Tengo seem to be able to excel at just about anything they do!

Awesome vid of them in Paris by Vincent Moon:

Songs : 'With a girl like you' (Troggs cover) / 'Our way to fall'

Just wanted to check in and say that I checked out I Can Hear the Heart Beating... and I loved it! Amazing stuff... especially loved "Damage". Took me one or two listens to fully appreciate the whole thing.

Had a quick listen to I'm Not Afraid of You... and the opening tracks sounded great; must finish it soon.

Then I checked out And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out which I loved right away; heard it all in one sitting; fantastic from start to finish. Can't wait to hear it again.

    Will continue the quest.

    Thanks again!

Did anyone see them when they were over here a while ago. I enjoyed the gig but was underwhelmed by them mainly because i really loved their albums and probably had too high expectations. Just wondering what people thought of it

Try their Summer Sun album....Today Is The Day being the standout track. One of my fave chill out albums :)
