I found a cheque that is dated June 2009, just wondering if this is out of date? Do cheques expire after 6months or is it at discretion of the teller?

They are "stale" or out of date after six months. Tellers have no discretion in this matter at all.

As Rochester said, it's 6 months and tellers have no discretion. It should also be noted that some Post Office 'Warrants' are only valid for 3 months from the date of issue, but it does say that on them if that is the case.
