Taxing someone else's car

My own car is broke, so I'm going to use my sisters for a while.
She hasn't used it for 6 months (she's away) and the tax is up.

I've got a RF100A form and I must get a garda stamp on the out of use section. On the rest of the form, will I fill in her details and sign it on her behalf? Is this ok? There is an insurance section on the form too. If her insurance is up, I can't really put her details down I guess.

Should I fill in my own details, even though the car is not mine? My insurance policy allows me to drive other cars, so I'm ok from that point of view.

What's the best way around this?

Your insurance is only valid driving other cars if the other car you are driving is already insured to another persons policy. If it was me I would just transfer the car to my own ownership and insure and tax it, when you get your other car sorted just transfer it all back. Putting it in your own name will eliminate the need for the off the road tax declaration and I'd recommend transferring ownership on the 1st April so you only start paying from then rather than the rest of this month.

not trying to pick holes here but have you read the OPs insurance policy ?

OP - check with your insurance company to see if your policy allows you to drive other vehicles with the permission of the owner and if there are any limitations/requirements.

Pretty sure you have to own the car to tax it, no?

If this was just a case of getting a new tax disc for your sister, the only requirement would be for her name signed on the form. Nobody would stop you going in to actually pay for it.
This case is different. Im sure the actual owner would need to visit the gardai to make the declaration of being off road. This would be the major sticking point imo.
Also, the car is not insured. Your insurance will not cover it unless you transfer your policy onto this car.

To transfer the insurance is easy enough anyway, so not that big an issue.
I must check the small print but I have fully comp for my own car and my policy does state that I'm allowed to drive any other car with third party cover. I don't see why I couldn't drive it. I'm not saying your wrong, just doesn't make much sense.

I'm going out in a minute and I'll check the actual dates of everything. If the tax arrears isn't too much, I might just pay that.

Just fill out all the stuff on the form with your sisters details and her policy number, if thats not available just put in your own. Dosnt make one bit of difference. Go to any garda station to get it stamped and simply tell them your sister is away and that your going to get it sorted on her behalf. I have done it a few times and they dont mind (in galway anyway). Then to make life simple just tell your insurance company your car is in the garage and they will give you 2 weeks free temporary cover on any other car (your sisters).

quinn used to offer third party only insurance on a car not owned or hired to you, whether the car was insured or not

that was about 4 years ago so i dont know if it has changed since then

Not sure what to advise on the tax part tbh. If it was me I would just sign it on your sister's behalf and like brembo mentioned, tell the gardai you are sorting it for her while she's away.

I you have fully comp insurance I would ask your insurance company to transfer the insurance over to your sisters car, if you're paying for it you may aswell have it.

With regards to driving of other cars, my own policy gives me third party cover on any car (as long as it's not my partner/spouses) whether the car is insured or not. (Zurich)

Are we sure on the car not having to be insured, surely this is open to massive abuse in that you could have a €100 Punto insured in your own name which would have a low risk rating but have an M3 in your wifes with no insurance on it but just tax. I know it's only 3rd party cover in the M3 but still it's a massive loophole for someone to get driving a completely different class of car to what the original policy was written for?

    I'm sure about my policy.

I think some policies state that you can drive an engine size higher than your own, others it's up to 2litre max.

And yeh, the third party rule would certainly put most off writing off an M3 me thinks. Sure even if the car was insured, the insurance is meaningless if a non named driver is behind the wheel (except if there is open driving)

I know, tis a massive loophole. its handy tho if one of your mates is on the beer and he cant drive or going on a road trip and take turns driving something similar.

edit: actually this only applies if the other person has their car insured

simply get your girlfriend or any else girl to motortax fill the tax renewal form and let her go and pay for your sister, i cant see any wrong with it

in the case, where u want to tax it only from present time, u will have to go to gardai station and explain situation and more than less u will get the form stamped that the vehicle was parked so u should do that firstly

about driving somebodys else car without current insurance disc, for fully comprehensive policy is cool, as long as u're not in UK where the gardais dont let people do that

in ROI u will be fine as far as u're insured with the policy allowing you to do that.

that sounds bit ridiculous, coz as somebody stated u can have insured punto 1.1 and drive scooby on somebodys else name, but... as far as u drive it not too many times and have a good reason for it u will be fine. practiced.

    Thanks all for the suggestions.

    Just to update:
I did wait till April. Transferred my insurance over for the month, so I had fully comp on it. Filled in my sister's details (used my insurance policy no) & signed her name on the form. Got it stamped, no problem. One or two quick questions, just why was it off the road etc... No problems in the tax office either.

Didn't get stopped once while driving it for 4/5 weeks. Got my own car back Thursday evening. My tax & NCT both expired while it was in the garage. Got caught yesterday at a checkpoint, my first day driving it :(

This is the case with Quinn, Hibernian and AXA. The car doesn't need to be insured. I've gotten written responses to verify this.

Each policy is different though (i.e for AXA you must be over 25)

Just bring up to date tax & NCT down to the local station within 10 days. And my cert of insurance, even though there was nothing wrong with my insurance disc.

But no fine or anything, thankfully. I did get my tax form stamped yesterday, so I won't be paying for March. Got NCT booked for Thursday, so hopefully I'll pass that and everything will be ok.

bring them tax disc and the insurance cert
if the nct run out recently they will understand and let u go
just book it up and print the confirmation letter
u will be fine, 4 sure

Got a fine in the post today
They just didn't mention at the time that I would be getting one and mislead me into thinking that I wouldn't get a fine if I showed all my certs within the 10 days. But I was wrong.

I know technically, I was driving my car within displaying a valid tax disc but I thought they might be a bit more lenient than this in the circumstances.
