Audio Configuration completely messed up - No Sound

Hey guys. All of a sudden on my computer (Windows XP) there's no sound. The computer doesn't recognize that there are speakers plugged in and even though they're turned on nothing happens. The little volume icon on the taskbar is gone too. I'm worried a trojan or something has destroyed my audio drive.

Any help would be much appreciated

Have you recently updated the software or installed something new?

I'm assuming you're using a PC, if this is the case & you use a sound card & not the on-board sound make sure the card is sitting properly. Give it a little push in to the slot.

If that doesn't work you'll have to go to the control panel, system & then hardware configuration!

Have a look and see if there's an exclamation mark beside your audio!

If this is the case, right click & update or restore the previous driver.

If that doesn't work you'll have to look for the proper driver on-line. It should be on your manufacturers website under support.

Try installing it & you may need to restart depending on the software.

Let me know how you get on :)

Nothing new's been installed except Safari the browser. When I got to control panel and into the sound & audio devices it's all greyed out as if I had nothing plugged in at all. I don't own a sound card, just the basic inbuilt one!

No exclaimation points on the device manager anywhere either =/

    Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-2/A-3] PCI

That's the sound driver I require but can't seem to locate it anywhere. :(

    stupid stuff

check your laptop for a physical volume control (stupid I know)

system restore is also worth a try to rule out software

I'm sorted. Downloaded a new sound driver and I'm good to go.
