    Hey,
I have a distant friend that is currently living in england and still getting the irish dole. I dont think this is right being able to do this. He flies home once a month to sign on and then gets the money into his account every week. is there any laws around this? or will he end up getting caught?

Or, and here's a novel ideal, you could shop the wanker to the social. You are after all paying for this tomfoolery out of your own PAYE pocket remember. So he is in effect stealing from you.

I don't think you can do that anymore, you have to collect your dole but a cousin of mine got her dole for a whole year she was in Australia. I have no idea how she did it. Shocking behaviour.

I was under the impression that you had to turn up at the post office every week to collect the dole in person, I thought they put a stop to direct bank payments because of that exact scenario of people abroad collecting and coming over to Ireland once a month to sign on.

The queues are so long, it takes a month to get to the counter, then you queue up again.

I think it depeds on whether you're getting Job Seekers or a different kind. Also, if you live more than a certain distance from a social welfare office or post office, you only have to sign on every so often. My sister had to sign a posted form once a month when she was on it, and she only had to turn up at the office to sign every 3 months.

I thought that too about the post office - you have to go collect now as they dont pay into bank account anymore.... But I have never once been asked for ID there so really i could have anyone collecting it for me.

My friend manages a shop in town & a girl who worked there was having a hissy fit as she needed every Thursday off & they couldnt guarantee it every week. After questioning over & over again, she needed the Thursdays off to sign on & collect ( it was both same day) for a friend who had returned to Poland ( she too had worked in same shop) & had returned 6 months previous.... & yes they contacted SW about it.... I was uber shocked by this but supposidly no its very very common

Not if you have been on the dole since before the changes. Only new claims from that date were required to collect in the post office.

Yeah, 'cause that's how its always worked...

Our SW is very easy to scam. I haven't, nor ever will scam it though.

All you have to do is be paid off the books, or don't stop claiming when employed and hope they don't catch you.

Knew a bird who was attending the Institute of Education and collected her dole every week, missed an english class for it.

Probably not. They'll eventually get him to sign on more often or get him to provide evidence that he's been looking for work and he'll decide its not worth the hassle or, at some stage, he'll decide to do the right thing and sign off.

Its unlikely that they'll catch him, especially when the people who know about his fraud are keeping quiet about it.

Why don't you drop a line to the Social and tell them about him?

Ah in fairness she could have been on the back to education scheme, which is totally above board.

Yes you can, you have to request it to be paid to your bank account. If you don't it will still be paid to the post office.

It's easier than you think. You book your flight/ferry bring it to the dole office say "I have to go to England due to family matters, here's proof I'll be out of the country during said period of time" They freeze it, you come back, you get a nice big juicy cheque.

This only effected new claimants. If you were on social welfare before this change, you were fine. Now you have to sign on every month and collect it every week. In the case of your cousin, she probably put a rural address down and that way she only has to drop into the social welfare office with a form that she signed. Somebody she knew could have done this for her.

That was only for new claimants. They didn't change any of the old claimants, for some reason. People still get it paid into their account.

No you can't. Request or not, you have to collect it from your local post office every week. Some cases may be different if the claimant is in a very rural area. The vast majority of people now cannot get it paid into their accounts.

It's not that simple. You can only take 12 days off a year for holidays. You wouldn't be allowed to leave the country for months for "family matters" and have them still pay you.
