What is about VW designers that they can make simple crisp lines look so lovely on their small and medium cars yet once they try to make something bigger they end up with a car that looks like its been eating pies all its life.....

I give you the new Sharan apparently. Unless those photos are rubbish it would make you wonder why they bothered!

    It's a people carrier. They're all ugly.

I don't know, that kink in the rear window line is inspired, very sporting and risque.

    Lovely?

VW have never, ever designed anything "lovely" ...never mind "exciting" or godforbid "beautiful".

Solid, clear and always slightly verging on boring, that's their line ...and in that respect the Sharan fits right in.

Once in their career they just about managed "crisp" ...and that was the Scirocco (old and new)

I think the Mk1 Golf was pretty sharp too. You're right though, they're generally conservative-looking cars at best.

The Golf was designed by Italian automobile architect / designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, of the ItalDesign design studio. Giugiaro had also designed the Alfa-Sud and the Lotus Esprit Mk1.

(and watered down in Wolfsburg, no doubt)

    :D

^^ Looks like something out of a Pixar movie

Mk1 Golf and the Scirocco's are the only nice looking motors to come out of VW IMO.

While it is only a concept model the New Compact Coupe that appeared at the Detroit Auto show looks pretty good. Similarities to the current BMW 3 series coupe.

They're very good at taking inspiration from others, the passat does bear more than a passing similarity to the C class (that's where the similarity ends of course).

A quick check confirms that the Mk I Scirocco was also designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro :D

so that leaves us with "lovely" VW's like this
