Purchasing a Camper Van, Insurance for driving it home?

    Hi there,

I am going to view a camper van, which is located the other end of the country, on Saturday. It is 17 years old and does not have an engineer’s report.

My question is, if I decide to purchase the camper what are my options regarding insurance and bringing it home .

Can I take out a policy with Dolmen on the phone and provide the required documentation later?
Could my partner drive it under her private car policy as she does not own it?
Or do I have to get the vehicle towed?
Or are there any other options?

    Thanks in advance

see can you get seller to provide an engineers report.dolmen may not cover you if you cant provide one.i think they allow you 14 days to do so.you will have to arrange cover before you travel on friday.

When we got insured with Stuarts we were given a week or two to get the engineers report done. Which was handy as I needed to take it for a spin to make sure all was well with it (brakes, shocks, sterring etc). Had the report done within the week, no problem.

Did Stuarts make you get the Engineers report from a Main dealer or did a SIMI garage do?

We got it done in a seat garage even though our van is a transit. They accepted that no problem and said any main dealer would do. They might accept a simi garage. Probably best ring them though.
