XP SP3 HD audio not working

    Hi,
I've been updating a few PCs for our school recently, and have come across
this problem on two of them - quite different machines - and when looking it
up online find it seems to be a really common problem.
Basically the HD audio drivers were releases as an update to SP2, but were
not included at all in SP3. I'm finding loads of talk about the problem, but
very little in the way of definite solutions.

Does anyone have a reliable procedure to get the sound working again?
Love to hear from a system builder who's been bitten by it in the past!

I've tried telling windows it's on SP2, reinstalling the UAA HD Audio hotfix (KB888111),
and then regedit'ing back to SP3, but no joy.
This does seem to have worked for others, but not for me :-(

The UAA driver is already included in SP3 so there should be no need to install it again from the 888111 package.
