Good Friday

The Celtic tiger was good for so many things in the modern day Ireland but how come the dark age of not being allowed to have a drink in a pub on Good Friday was left behind?I can understand when this country was under the thumb of the Catholic Church that it could not happen but today,in a society where a hospital does not erect a crib at Christmas for fear of upsetting non Christians, surely the opening of a pub for even 8 hours does not constitute a mortal sin.I am amazed that the powerful vintners associations have not fought this totally out of date legislation.I post this before knowing if the Limerick publicans have been granted an exemption. The state actually opposed it.For the love of God,get rid of those Iranian type mullahs and replace with intelligent people.Surely with unemployment at 13%,there should be a large choice. The total irony of the Limerick situation is that people at the match can drink themselves silly without boo.Maybe this event might be the one to make common sense prevail and have freedom of choice for drinkers and non-drinkers.

As a betting man, I suggest the exemption will not be allowed. Amen ;)

I think the dry days are ridiculous but I think it's more ridiculous how people behave. I remember working in an off licence on holy thursday before. You'd swear that people were going to hide out in nuclear bunkers for weeks. And am I wrong in stating that you can still get alcohol at the match and in resident bars? This countrys attitude to alcohol borders on embarassing.

They got their exemption. Another victory for alcoholism.

    Who got the exemption?

It seems it was just the stadium?

Not much information there. On what basis did he allow the exemption? Competition? Discrimination?

I'd be surprised if this exemption isn't used by the LVA or at least the publicans of Dublin as a platform to lodge their own, "If they can do it, why can't we?" application.

Public safety. Too many people leaving with nowhere to go. I think he also tried to imply that the stadium exemption should be extended to the surrounding pubs.

Sorry Tom.A victory for the 21st century. When one considers the abuse inflicted on the innocent, surely a few pints on Good Friday doesn't do any harm. Now there will be no need for the furtive glance to make sure the coast is clear before sneaking in for a quick 1.

The stadium though has a special licence for the day, it doesn't seem to have been part of this application.

Increasing public safety by letting them go into pubs? :)

I wonder if the Government will make a challenge.

I can think of better ways to spend tax money.

Absolutely. On one hand I'm hoping that other publicans follow suit and a countrywide exemptions ends up being declared for the day.

On the other hand I know that if such a thing was to take place it'll become a yearly ritual where the LVA apply for an exemption and it's granted by a judge and the legislators then don't bother their arses getting around to modernising the licencing laws until 2075.
