From today's Irish Independent, Thursday, 25th March 2010

The Civil, Public and Services Union (CPSU) last night stepped up its campaign to reverse Budget pay cuts by announcing plans to close welfare office across the country this afternoon.

The move, which will affect thousands of people depending on benefits, comes as the passport dispute continues to worsen.

Are they shutting down for this afternoon only, or is it from now until the dispute is sorted? It is hard to make out from the article.

It seems to be this afternoon only - there's been a few afternoon only closures since the work to rule started.

Thanks, it is the way it is reported that the CPSU plan to shut the Social Welfare Offices from today.

Nothing much on national media yet, but this from Donegal radio

    from http://oceanfm.ie/news/2010/03/25/fears-over-1pm-closure-at-social-welfare-offices/

Fears over 1pm closure at social welfare offices

There’s growing worries over the impact the possible early closure of social welfare offices will have on those waiting for benefits across the North West.

The on-going industrial action by the Civil Public and Services Union has already caused chaos for members of the public waiting to get their passports processed.

The CPSU annual conference is being held in Galway today, with the decision to close social welfare offices by 1pm each day likely to feature highly on the agenda along with on-going passports fiasco.

There are over 20,000 people on the Live Register in Donegal alone.

Donegal North East Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh says closing offices early could create major difficulties for those wanting to collect benefits or apply for allowances.
