Has Ireland lost it's self-respect as a republic?

Just reading an article there that would suggest that Ireland has lost it's self respect as a republic.

That we don't act like sovereign republic any longer.

Do you think that this is true, have we lost respect for ourselves as a republic?

For instance, are we too lax on non-EU immigration and movement within the state as the article suggests?
The truth is that we do not behave like a sovereign republic.

We exert almost no control over movement into the State.

Moreover, we treat our passports as if they were monopoly money.

A generation ago, CIA operatives entering Iran illegally used Irish passports. Today, it is the Israelis. And why not?

Last year, 36,264 Irish passports, or 6.3pc of total issued, were "lost", ha ha ha.

We no longer have the punt: instead we have a new international currency which declares that "the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland requests all whom it may concern to allow the bearer, a citizen of Ireland, to pass freely and without hindrance, and to afford the bearer all necessary assistance and protection."

The manner in which a country issues its passports tells you a great deal about its own self-respect.

And US passport holders must be tax-compliant with the US government.

You certainly don't get a US passport simply because you mentioned that you might set up a factory somewhere.

Americans -- who usually get these things right -- take their passports, their identity and their immigration policies very seriously indeed.

So, do you think Myers has a point here?

Or do you think it's is a load of cock?

That article was the first Kevin Myers piece I've read and will most certainly be the last. Shoddily written lazy journalism.

International bloody assassins are usually good at getting passports and the like, it doesn't mean we need to make it a pain in the ass to go on holidays. We already have to deal with ryanair ffs.

Are you actually proposing an internal passport system?

36,000 passports actually equates to less than one percent of the population. If you lose your passport more than three times, you will have extreme difficulty getting another one... not withstanding the work to rule at the moment.

I'm just looking at my own passport, and I have to say it is a very sophisticated document. It is one of the most secure in the world I believe since its redesign. There are so many features, from the pin punched picture, to the green white and orange binding thread, its next to impossible to copy.

We gave up the Punt because as a small currency it is prone to fluctuation and attack. The euro was meant to give us stability, and with stability comes prosperity.

As for the americans getting everything right. Their currency is the most counterfeited one in the world. I know it has much to do with the dollars dominance, but also anyone with a decent printer can run off pretty good forgeries. Inertia stops them from changing.

Every country has its problems, ours is no different.

    No.

It was a question based on the content of the article.

An article that I disagree with by the way.

This has no relevance whatsoever. It's as a percentage of total passports issued that's important. Plus, I'd be interested to see the proportion of Irish passports that are issued to people either resident or born in the Republic of Ireland (I'm not one of them ;))

Precisely, maybe Mr. Myers can expand on this particular part of the article .. ;)

It wasnt bertie who made us go out and waste our money on extra houses, cars, pubs etc and think that keeping up with the jones' , just wasnt enough. Blame it on him if it makes ya feel better for getting carried away with all the money that everyone had went to their head. Everyone is in the same boat now, well not everyone but people where alot friendlier in the 80's when none of us had money.

I would say yes, Ireland has lost a lot of self respect. In some ways, it's very justified though. Irish people stood by the church despite numerous scandals and allegations and outright injustices, so I can't help but lack respect for a lot of our nation.
