ah i think i know what he's asking.

    the answer is....

if you have an mp3 file on your desktop and you open it, itunes automatically copies it into it's own library (this is actually a setting that is checked by default on macs i think).

So if you delete that mp3 on your desktop you will still be able to listen to it in itunes as it has been copied to the itunes library.

The way Itunes works is it creates an XML file (think of it as a fancy text file) that tells the program where your media files are located. If the media files are deleted from those locations then no they will not play.

If your version of Itunes is copying your media files to a second location like how Jsuited described then yes, you can delete the original files as there are duplicate files on your hard drive which Itunes is referencing. If it is not copying your files to a secondary location then no you cannot delete them.

just deleted the back files of a band in itunes and then went into itunes and it still played so it must be ok to do so
