I was hoping to watch a webcast of a Joint Committe of the Dail today, but it is meeting in private session.

Surely all Dail proceedings (and relevant sub-groupings) are open to public scrutiny?

Is the public entitled to view a transcript of such proceedings?

Transcripts are normally available within a few days.

There are valid reasons for meeting in private. People will tend to be more honest(!) and open if they don't have to follow some sort of populist line (abolish all taxes!) that is actually in nobody's interest. Putting things on record means they have to follow the line and can't make concessions so as to progress things to a conclusion.

Then there are matters of personal, commercial or criminal privacy. How would the justice committee discuss current affairs without prejudicing things?
