Couples holiday in the Med- Any Ideas?

    Hi guys,

Myself and my girlfriend are looking at going somewhere in the Mediterranean this summer. We've both been to Croatia and I've been to Greece. I really like both and would love to go back but like to go somewhere new each time I go away. Really liked the island hopping aspect of both though.
Would anyone have any suggestions of somewhere that would really suit couples in the Med? I've been looking at Malta/Gozo and we've both been talking about Sicily for a while. Ideally we'd like somewhere that is relaxed, where we can move around a bit, maybe stay in a few locations and has a bit of life as well (not too crazy though). Also somewhere that wouldn't do major damage to the wallet too would be good. Not a fan of the whole package holiday thing and crowded beaches/holiday resorts really dont do it for us.

    Thanks guys!

.......Ha ha, I should stay in Ireland so?

We're veering more towards Sicily at the moment. Has anyone been there? Recommend anything? Is it expensive?

    Thanks

looks like ya should! At least it isn't too crowded (here!)

What was Croatia like? Any tips? We're looking at going to Budapest for a few days then to Croatia somewhere to chillout... with similar requests as yourself.

We were in Sicily about 4 years ago. Went on a package as we felt at the time it was the cheapest way to go but would only return independently.
Taormina is beautiful but expensive. It's a "must visit" though. You could source accommodation in nearby Giardini Naxos which is just a short busride away.
We took a train to Syracuse where we got accommodation in a hostel and stayed overnight. Syracusa is an interesting city with the ruins of a great Roman amphitheatre and a wonderful Greek Theatre .During The Summer they put on plays in the Greek theatre. A must visit!

At the time we visited we found Syracusa to be very cheap .
We had a 3 course meal (including bottle of wine and bottle of sparkling water) in well known topclass local restaurant and it was less then 40 for both of us!
You could also take a trip to the Aeolians Island and do guided tours of the volcano's. Sadly we didn't have enough time to visit them especially as we were tied to staying near Taormina and had already ovenighted in Syracusa. They are on my list when I return!

I would suggest you check TripAdvisor for some more ideas.

    Hi there,

Myself and my boyfriend just booked Sicily recently for this summer!

Got return flights with Aerlingus Dublin-Catania for €125 each incl a checked back. We dont have heaps of money either so after much searching online we've found a few great bargains for our holiday. We also didnt want a package holiday, wanted somewhere to maybe visit a few different towns.. and from what we've booked so far, this is working out much cheaper anyway :)

We're staying in a hostel for 2 nights in Catania, double room is only €45 a night! It was recommended in "The Rough Guide - Sicily"..it was really central, close to main attractions of Catania which is perfect for us. Apparently it has a nice little bar too that lots of people come to socialise in, even who aren't staying in the hostel. Heres the link - http://www.agorahostel.com/main/Home.htm

We're then going to go to Taormina for 3 nights. Another user on boards recommended not to stay in Giardini Naxos as it doesnt have the same vibe as Taormina so after much googling, I found this place - €76 a night for a double room with a balcony and sea view.

At the moment, we're stewing over what to do on our last 2 days before we head back to Catania...I'll keep an eye here for any suggestions :)

Thanks guys! Great detail. Sorry I had kinda forgotton about this thread.

Still not sure about what to do yet.

We're thinking, if we do go to sicily, of going for 2 weeks- would that be too much.

Also we're thinking of hiring a car- would that be really expensive? is it essentially and also would you have a death wish doing it?

    Thanks again!
