    Hi everyone,
I'm a second year speech and language therapy student and as part of my course I had a talk yesterday from a laryngectomee. One of the things he really highlighted was the lack of training in administering CPR to laryngectomees. Just wondering if there are any paramedics on here, and do you get trained in administering CPR to laryngectomees?

Its covered to some degree in most programmes but is not a subject that gets a great amount of time. The concept is quite straight forward and in the absence of training common sense should apply. If they breath from their neck, blow in to their neck, try and close the mouth and nose as much as possible. Not a nice thing to have to do in bystander mode with mouth to stoma, but with equipment, a infant size face mask mask with an adult BVM (resus bag) will work perfectly.

Would the use of a Supraglottic airway work?
Engage brain first. It would not work.
You could use an adult bvm mask block entry hole place over mouth to seal off any escape of air and as described in previous post would work?

Thanks for that insight. The guy that was lecturing us says he carries a infant size face mask around with him all the time.

I was just asking out of curiosity as he told us a story about a guy in England who needed CPR for some reason. When the paramedics arrived they put the oxygen mask over his nose and mouth despite continued protests for his wife. They even told her to move away as they knew better than her. It took intervention from the police before they followed her advice!

This is no reflection on the majority of paramedics, I'm sure. I presume the training in England would differ slightly anyway?

You know, those stories can grow legs before they reach you.

I know they can but this was a friend of his that it happened to and I doubt he'd make it up. I don't know when it happened, it could have been years ago for all I know.
