Setanta -reduction in sub (if you look for it)

A Setanta rep phoned me over 3 months ago and offered me a 3 month package for €9.99/month which I agreed to. Unfortunately I forgot to cancel and noticed that a payment of €16.99 was taken from my bank account a few days ago which is their full monthly subscription rate.

Anyhow I rang them yesterday to cancel and after getting the usual "you're a valuable customer and I'll talk to my manager about making you another offer" message the guy offers me a €5 per month deal for the next 3 months. I took it.

So if any of you are thinking of canceling your sub give them a ring and tell them so and also point out that the footy season is nearly over and they are providing little or no exclusive sports coverage over the coming months and you should get a good deal out of them.

Instead of cancelling they kept you for 3 more months?

Nope. You will see that I opted to remain for a reduced fee if you take the time to read my post.

You also need to give two months notice to cancel Setanta so anybody wishing to cancel for the summer should do this. Then send them a letter the next day cancelling it and that way you save money whilst still cancelling. I done it last summer.

I did read it and what I saw was Setanta continue to get money from you. A job well done by the cancellation agent.

I pay €5 a month myself and have been on that deal for the last 9 months.
    Its just about worth that.
16.99 is an utter farce when you consider the only thing I watch on it is the 3pm Sat kickoffs.
Nearly everything else they show is available fta on bbc, itv, five or rte.

Read it again and you'll notice a few more things. For example. He wanted to cancel. You need to give two months notice. Two months at his old rate is 2X€16.99=€33.98

he can now keep it for €5 per months for three months. So in a month he can still ring up and give his two months notice and still only be charge €15 for the three months. That's a saving of €18.98 on Mufflers behalf. Well done Muffler and thanks for bringing it to our attention.

How if your subscribed annually do you have to give 2 months notice to cancel?

Its a waste of money for me because im never at home to watch the 3pm kick offs. And espn will probably have the fa cup irish rights next year so its not worth my while to renew.

I cancelled in January by email. Got a call from Scotland from a very nce Cs agent called Akim, with a ferocious Scottish accent:D, who offered me the next 3 months for €5 a month until 25th May. Then its bye,bye Setanta, I'm gone. And ESPN is no better. I'll be gone from them too when the footie is over.

if you are subscribing then you must take it for two months initially. fair enough. but after if you are a monthly paying customer you only need to give 30 days notice and you can take this as fact.

Well how could I possibly doubt Batman's Dad :D

I based what I said on what Setanta Customer Care quoted me on the phone, although I wouldn't put it past them to say such a thing to make it less appealing to unsubscribe. They also told me it had to be in writing.

I got a €10.99 3 month deal in August, then followed that with a €5 3 month deal straight after that, I paid €16.99 for the last 2 months and said I'd chance my arm again and was given the usual valued customer speech and offered it for €9.99 for 3 months, I asked to get it for a fiver but no way, try again in 3 months was the answer I got!! so I take it from that I'll get it for a fiver then and TBH there is no way I'm paying anything more over the summer months when theres nothing on. Only obligation I'm under is to give 30 days notice if and when I want to cancel.

Just one other thing, the operator told me they are after aquiring an extra 12-15 Premier League matches that ESPN lost the rights to in Ireland and are in negotiations with the Premier League over exactly what matches they are but they will more than likely be midweek matches that Sky don't show

utter rubbish is what i would say..... espn have the uk and ireland rights to their 23 matches next year sky have uk and irish rights to 115 matches(the 23 that espn lost included in this 115).... no way would either station let setanta have em....

Yes, this was my initial reaction also and I put this to the operator, TBH he seemed to know his stuff, he detailed every sporting event they have and the ones they've lost (Magners League etc).
These 12-15 matches are in addition to the 33 Sat 3pm ones and they are'nt on live on Sky/ESPN, ie; midweek matches and Sunday matches that are put back because of Europa League fixtures, one example would possibly be Birmingham V Liverpool next Sunday at 3pm.
Thats what he told me anyway, whether its true or not we'll find out soon enough.

interesting indeed... but i do wonder was it the same operator that told me that setanta had exclusive formula 1 coverage and fa cup etc and that itv/bbc didnt have it etc...anyway if its true they have done some smart manouvering in getting these rights albeit secondary rights.

If they have these extra matches why aren't they promoting them in ther advertising?

I hope that ESPN have the Irish rights for FA Cup and that we don't have the situation that exists with the Europa League whereby ESPN's coverage is blocked here. If that happens and along with their loss of 23 prem matches, I can see the end of needing ESPN.

FYI I have finally cancelled Setanta. I have been on various deals for the last 3 years and am finally fed up of having to remember to ring them every so often to threaten to cancel and then be offered another 3 months at a fiver.

Last time I rang he said best he could do was €9.99 a month for three months and would activate my second box as well. I said I didn't need that but he would not do it for the fiver. In fairness,my mind was made up to cancel unless he offered perhaps a 12 month deal, so I am currently working out my notice till end of April.

They will probably ring me next season but I will not be subbing to them at any price. I have had enough hassle.

As one fella posted one time "Its easier get a divorce than get rid of Setanta!"

    From their frequently asked questions
Can I get Setanta Sports for just one month? We offer our customers a minimum subscription term of two months and we won’t tie you in to a contract for a year. You may cancel your subscription any time after the first ten days of your initial subscription by providing us with 30 days notice which will take effect 30 days after your next billing date.
This essentially means it will be greater than 30 days unless you by chance ring up the day before your bill is due.
