How is a new handicap worked out?

Just submitted my 2nd of 3 cards for a handicap at my new club. Can't wait to get the 3rd in on Saturday and finally get an official handicap.

    How is it calculated?
I understand that anything over double-bogey is immediately discounted and that there is more to it than just taking the average of the 3 cards.

I have in no way pulled, but I am just curious to see if I get what I expect (around 12).

    Cheers,

Take out any thing worse than a double bogey.
Use the best (adjusted) gross score and subtract the SSS and all things being equal you'll be left with your handicap.
You might get a manual correction done if there were other circumstances like a previous handicap or a bunch of birdies on your cards etc.

Is it possible to scratch any holes on the cards that you submit?

Due to submit first card tomorrow. Not familiar with playing partners so I don't want to hold them up on the inevitable few nightmare holes that I'm bound to have!

I'm about to go through the same process of getting a handicap, have only been a member for 10 years (don't ask), I have been told to hole out at every hole even if it's in double digits, hope there isn't a crowd behind me :)

The way handicaps come out in some clubs i dont think they base it on cards, I think they take 4 dice and roll them, then add up the points and thats your handicap!

In theory if you're having a 'mare on a hole it shouldn't matter because it will be adjusted to a double bogey anyway but I'd recommend completing all the holes (as much as possible)...
Keep your cards and submit the three together in an envelope to the handicap sec (with any other relevant info) and off you go.

is there anyway of getting a handicap without being a member of a club??

i have never been a mamber of a golf, and doubt i will be in the near future. but i do play golf in different clubs, with friends, and have played the odd charity competition. i have always been asked for my handicap when signing in, to which i reply embaressingly 'i dont have one'.

    so is it possible?

The only way to have an official handicap is to become a member of an affilliated club.
The lowest cost option is somewhere around €150 for distance membership which you must pay every year, along with your GUI levy of around €20
Then you can compete in open competitions anywhere...

It comes up regularly enough on this forum...
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055862778 is a recent thread.

Do a search on distance memberships to find out more choices and thoughts.
