I've to RMA my old (gentoo install) hard drive and I want to wipe it before I send it back. I've backed up /etc and my home directory. I feel like I'm forgetting something though. Want to wipe and RMA it today. Am I forgetting stuff?

Are you planning on a gentoo reinstall when you get the new HDD? Perhaps you have a kernel config you want to keep? Or just keep the whole /boot , that way you wouldn't have to (re)compile your kernel when you reinstall.

Otherwise I think you have it all...

Thanks. Yeah that's a good idea actually. I'll take the kernel config and the /boot directory too. No harm. I think I just needed confirmation that I wasn't beeing an eejit. :)

Just curious as to what's in /etc that you would need again. I've never backed this up and now you have me curious.

Little config changes I've made over the years. Passwordless sudo for the shutdown command. Few changes to ssh config. Stuff like that.

Do you have any databases in /var?

Don't think so, but I'll check, cheers.

Check out /var/www for any web work you might have done on it.
mysql and postgres may have stuff lying around.
/opt and /usr/local are always worth a poke around before wiping too.
