Software to rip DVD to iPod/iPhone

I've got a long flight coming up in the next few days and I was thinking about ripping some dvd's onto my iPod to watch during it. Can anyone recommend some good software?

I have Real Player SP installed on my machine but it's the free version so I don't think the dvd to iPod/iPhone aspect is enabled.

Also, do you have any idea how much space a dvd would take on the iPod when the video is converted?

I would be willing to consider free and pay software.

    Thanks.

What I use is DVDFab....this is a great piece of software. It'll allow you to convert DVDs & regular movie files (avi, mpeg, etc) to iPod format. There are other conversion options too but the above two are the only ones I use for my iPhone. I downloaded my copy from a sharing website so I dont know how much it is.

Its nice and quick compared to other products and really straightforward. I converted "Law abiding citizen" to MP4 last night which was a 1GB AVI file in 25 minutes. It took well under a GB on my iPhone.

I convert episodes of the Sopranos on DVD to iPod format and each one is approx 400\500MB. A whole film would probably be around 1GB or under

    Good luck and happy viewing!

Grandmaster, I use this dvd to Ipod convertor. http://www.mp4converter.net/dvd-to-ipod-converter-win.html

Its one of the best although it has a $29 price tag. However, it decodes and rips in 2 clicks of a button. I mean, no flutten about with 2 or 3 programs for decoding, unlocking ripping etc.

You put the dvd in, select the chapter or full film and press rip. Thats it. - Painless and works every time.

If you do buy it there are 2 settings that need to be changed to sync the video and voice. I had this problem and the support team emailed me straight away. I'll PM you if you need them.

I used Real Player SP to convert a load of AVI's last night, although it took quite a long time. I converted about 20 last night and left it running all night and it took 7 hours. The AVI's varied between 175 and 350 MB each in size.

I'll check out those other apps but I don't know if they will convert things much faster, although I think Real Player SP wants me to pay for it to convert actual DVD's.

But I suppose there's no point converting too much stuff. I can't see my iPod battery lasting for 9 or 10 hours of solid video watching and I won't have a laptop with me so I don't think I can charge it up onboard.

    Handbrake FTW!

    http://handbrake.fr/

the version I have downloaded has an iPhone option so it will automatically convert to the correct resolution.

Also great for converting to many other formats.

ah yeah. You will need a second piece of software. But a mod could decide that by me telling you how to get around the DVD encryption I am helping you breach copyright laws.

I don't fancy getting banned for that so I will PM you instead.
