This is a weird one. I'd post it in technology but its really more of a political issue.

Google have started redirecting searches to Hong Kong servers.

China has now started blocking Google's Hong Kong servers.

One has to wonder where this actually ends. Google and China don't seem to be compatible with each other.

Frankly, if I owned Google, once I'd completely pulled out of the country, I'd hire a team of programmers just devise ways of circumventing (and updating) how to get around their Chinese censorship walls.

I can actually sympathise with google

the amount of crap that hits my network/servers that originates from China, Ukraine and Moldova is incredible

i considered outright blocking at the firewall for these countries
but ended up putting them on a gray list to notify me of anything funny, i dont think its fair that people from these countries have no access due to a few rotten apples, unfortunately the amount of rotten apples is off the scale

and what's worse complaining does nothing, every other isp once contacted about abuse issues sort things out

i believe boards have also taken similar steps from what i read before here

i wonder if they will block Gmail and Scholar, blocking these two services would really set back the academic community there

Probablt not technically feasible. The Chinese control the infrastructure and hence the routing of traffic. Unless Google provided end-user connections to individuals in China it wouldn't work.

Agree with your comment about compatability issues. Wonder that this wasn't a bigger issue before the arrival of Google.
