I have just received a newsletter from FG's Senator Jerry Buttimer. Now we don't normally get newsletters from Senators, so we can assume this is the firing shot for his next General Election campaign. The subject is the Health system.Under the ' Universal Health Insurance' section Senator Buttimer includes the following section :

"This restores the benefits of the medical card to most over 70's middle income pensioners.
( e.g Retired Teachers, Civil Servants, Gardai) "

No other occupations are mentioned other than Retired teachers, Civil Servants or Gardai. so this raises the question as to whether Senator Buttimer regards private sector pensioners as being of any value or importance. ( It should be noted that Buttimer is himself a teacher )
It also raises the question of whether or how much Buttimer and his party are committed to reforming the public sector. Enda Kenny is of course a teacher himself, or at least for twenty years as a full time TD, he held on to his Permanent teacher''s position and only gave it up last year when it became inconvenient to hold on to it.
Of course this may be a case of exaggerating the value of something trivial or it may be a key to understanding the Senator's view of the world.
Would electing FG to Government simply be a case of replacing one set of Pro- public sector politicians with another ? It should be noted we now have six teachers holding Ministerial positions.
