Such a difficult thing to answer isn't it? I still love test cricket despite its dwindling popularity, but is their anything worse than a one sided test match? You get this mainly when New Zealand and Bangladesh travel:D

20/20 can be great fun, but sometimes it is overkill. The IPL is awesome but it's the same problem with baseball, its relentless and despite what Telly say not every game is do or die.

50 Overs cricket has its moments as well, although I may die if I see another Sri Lanka v India match in that format.:eek::eek:

Have to go with test cricket, i just love everything about it, well almost everything, but i do love T20 aswell. Some of the 50/50 games can drag a little in the middle overs

tbh, sometimes i actually watch the first 15-20 overs of a 50 over game, then turn it off till the last 5 overs!

Tests for me, simply because of the ebb and flow, and the tactical/strategic side of cricket is greatly emphasised in test cricket.

However, to watch live (at the ground), I prefer 50-over cricket, simply because it's nice to see a result on the day, all factors permitting.

I'm still on the fence re 20/20 - I enjoy it occasionally, and it's fun to play/umpire, but to watch constantly? I don't think so. Also have to say that the whole IPL thing is completely passing me by, I really don't see the point.

20:20 has its place, but the current frenzy (and in particular the franchise-based IPL) is a bubble waiting to burst. ODI is a great format, particularly live if you want to see all the constituent parts of cricket and are happy to spend a whole day at the match.

However the ultimate "test" says so on the tin. Test cricket is the sport in its purest form. It has survived in this form for a (very) long time, and will continue to do so. It will never go in and out of fashion (unlike other formats) and will always retain a dedicated following particularly in the countries in which it is played.

It's weird for me I guess, maybe someone can help me out here,

I find the middle overs in a ODI to be boring sometimes, but I love sitting and watching 90 overs in a day of Test Cricket,

and 20/20 Cricket I like a lot, it's exciting and full of action, then again people are out too quickly and it's all just whack whack whack out of the ground,

ODI's are good and I like them but Tests are the way to go, once Trott isn't playing :D, ( had to get that one in )...

    Don't really have one.

    They all have their merits.

I have never been one to bow to traditionalism or stand for nonsense because old people say its right. So I don't buy into this "Proper Cricket" attitude to Test cricket.

Hell, most Cricket isn't Test cricket, really if I was comparing formats I would be comparing Unlimited overs cricket, cos "Test" only really means elite level with an extra day inexplicably tagged on the end.

20/20 is great fun, but is a bit short so you don't get the real development between bat and ball.

ODI is Better in that respect, but the batting and running isn't as aggressive/entertaining.

Unlimited overs lets a battle develop with long spells, but the scoring rates are mostly slow and the game can go to sleep for hours on end.

Test cricket for me, as has already been said, it's the ebb and flow of the game that I like. I have to admit to not watching much cricket at all these days - no time - and in any event where have Bob Willis, Ian Botham, Viv Richards, Allan Border and Denis Lillee all disappeared to? :D
20-20 has its place and hopefully it will bring more people to the game and I would imagine it is having a very positive effect in Ireland but, in truth, its almost a different sport to Test cricket.

Couldn't leave this thread without dragging it a bit off topic but mention of the great man (Beefy) sent me off to You Tube and this clip from 1985 - I remember the excitement of watching it live. :D
